I thought you all were joking about this, but no. It's very real.
What book?
>>7640510
Infinite Jest, page 47.
What's wrong with it?
>And so but / And but so
Can anyone explain it to me? What does it mean? English isn't my native language and this just keeps confusing me. I haven't read anything by DFW, I'm just seeing that he uses this thing.
Is it something significant, or is it something like "like / you know / whatever" etc? I mean as a kind of filler word, a tic, or habit of saying it almost unknowingly (then again, it would have the significance for the text).

Maybe in the book it means something or is a filler word but not to anyone else which is why people talk about it.
It's comfy
We never joke.
>>7640507
plebs will never understand
It's quirky so it must be good
>>7640642
"And so" is like a continuation or a transition phrase and the "but" implies a contrast to something previously mentioned. It's very simple when you think about it. And so but I can see how you can be confused.
>>7640723
Thanks! I get it now, the problem probably was that I've never seen it in context
>>7640507
How do they resolve this in translations?
"And so" "but"
"Continuing on" "however"
>>7640507
Of course it's real you fucker
>>7640749
They don't, disappointingly.
>>7640507
it's not surprising. he's a shit writer.
>>7642564
I actually think it's quite a clever little quirk of style. It by itself doesn't indicate much either way.
>>7642568
>quirk of style
>defending shit writing
whatever you say, pleb.
>>7640507
i'm okay with this
>>7640510
If you can't tell just from the pic I'm going to have to ask you to leave.
>>7640510
Gravitys rainbow
Later on there's a "And then but so but what if then on the other hand"
>>7642677
That's the absolute pinnacle of the book 2bh
>>7642574
pure shitposting
>>7640723
It seems superfluous though.
>It's very simple when you think about it. But I can see how you can be confused.

It's supposed to be some sort of weird conversational thing-- I mean there's some sort of pretentious intellectual section, and what starts a new paragraph is such a silly phrase as 'and but so--' it's comic relief. I remember some audio or video where he talked about why he did it, but I can't seem to find it.
And then he remembered he thought ....
Hack attack!
>>7640507
Infinite shit.
>>7642788
>why he did it
>>7642788
>it's comic relief
I'm struggling to contain my laughter.
