Updike had some talent he just didn't know how to use it in a controlled, disciplined, artful way. He threw shit against the wall and what stuck stuck.
His whole brand of writing, autobiographical suburban white guy novels of experience, personal feelings, and identity, has taken a huge hit critically. People realized these type of writers don't deserve their reputations, but instead of taking it out back and shooting it, they simply elevated into its place equally unimaginative minority and female writers of autobiographical experience, personal feelings, and identity. The viewing of literature through this lens, this belief that this is what literature is, is what gave a perceived legitimacy to "we've heard enough from white guys!" Neither are concerned with style, form, language, aesthetic, ideas, touching the universal, transcending the page, etc etc.
