>novel written by a male in his early 20s
>main character is a 'not self-insert' young artist of a passionate and sensitive nature who falls in love with a girl but is misunderstood
>>

It would be just as trite as everything else

Self-inserts are the best type of character.
DFW and Joyce for example were not subtle at all about using them.

self inserst and mary sues are the biggest problems of modern writing.

Say it with me
YOU ARE NOT YOUR CHARACTERS!
YOUR CHARACTERS ARE PEOPLE YOU CREATED WITH THEIR OWN THOUGHTS AND HISTORY AND BACKSTORY AND FUTURE AND LIKES AND DISLIKES
>>

Joyce is a hack for making Stephen Dedalus. Neat.

All characters are just shards of the author who created them anyway. How could a writer ever create something totally alien to themselves.

its almost like other people exist, you narcissist fuck.

Do you have antagonists in your stories or love interests or parental figures?
Guess what in real life those people would think and act different from you, the way people grew up, a black person, an asian person, a white person, a women, a man, a poor person, a rich person, they all lived differently.
So shouldn't your characters be different?!

Where does your story start?
At what age is your character?
Do you discuss the characters past in the story?
do you know your characters future?
what are his goals, his wants, his needs?

Fuck you lazy fuckers!

hurrr ill just make the character me durrrr

>mfw my project is about a flooded town and family whose daughter has died, but they can't bury her because the cemetery is flooded, so the theme is desperation for closure

Pretty derivative of As I Lay Dying, but I haven't even read that book. Despite that, feelsgoodman.png
>>
>>7634703
why dont they just cremate her
>>
>>7634721
Not traditional to town or family. This kind of town only cremates people with AIDS or people who've blown their heads off.

Or I just came up with that off the top of my head, but thanks for bringing that up. I can be reflexive of that in the story.
