Is there a western work of literature (that isn't the bible) with a roughly equivalent amount of influence on western culture and symbols as Journey to the West has on eastern culture? If I had to guess I'd probably pick a Shakespeare play, but I'm not sure.

journey to the west is nowhere close to bible-levels of influence for eastern culture. it's a well known story for sure but something like rotk or jin yong/wuxia novels have a bigger influence on the masses, and dream of the red chamber is intensely studied in the literary/academic world
