Hey /lit, I know Dune and Atlus Shrugged are garbage books with shit writing from this board. Can someone who's completed or even read enough of atlus shrugged tell me why it's bad? I read Dune a while ago, I remember that it's exciting but not engaging. I want a more in depth reason as to why it's bad so I don't have to read these and tell others not to.

Read it for yourself and decide then.

wait, why would you have to read it? why would you automatically wish to tell others not to read it when you have no personal experience with it? if you're really curious enough, why not just read a bit of it yourself? i'm not sure why you feel that you need a reason not to read something, just don't and read something you want to read maybe?

Because relativist, post-moralist swine populate this board, her haughty stance against all things collectivist, deaf ear for sympathy, tin ear for human interaction and the general non-accomplishment in philosophy except for reiterating Aristotle and Kant have earned her a black mark.
That said, Atlas Shrugged would have been good as a snarky novella, maybe even a bigger hit than it was, but as a repetitive, hateful diatribe its not only excessive, but effectively galvanized every socialist cocksucker of the 20th Century to dismiss her as a corporate shill.
While Fountainhead is easily on the short list of best English language novels, Atlas Shrugged has rightfully earned Republican meme tier status, and should be avoided by the intellectual.

I loved atlas shrugged. You don't have to agree with an authors point of view to enjoy the story. I laughed, cried and was continuously surprised throughout. Maybe a bit too romanticized for my taste at times but it make me put it down. There's nothing anyone can say about anything until they've experienced it themselves. And even then it's their experience in their their reality, who knows what it'll mean to you, only you.

Natural Rights outlined by her school of Austrian Economics are so generally applicable that in its wake, relativism can be described as amoralism.

Maybe in the wake of the average plebian drone. Which may be unfortunately why this thread exists because people take the word of the anonymous masses over their own experience or wrist yet the lack there of. Not directed at you, but read a fucking book.

Tell me why this book sucks so I don't have to read it and further spread the lie that it sucks because thinking for myself is hard enough not to mention reading that big book.

Atlas Shrugged is a weird book. I read it several times in my early 20s and was "converted" briefly. Its bad because the writing is bad, its bloated, the speeches go on for pages and pages, people dont act the way people need to act for her point to actually work. Its better to read it remembering that communists traumatized Ayn Rand in her youth, and that her philosophy is a direct reaction to collectivization on the Stalinist model. The fountainhead is a much better book, where at least you can posit that one man can be objectivist instead of an entire society.

Dune is probably the height of 20th century sci-fi, with the exception of maybe Stanislaw Lem, and the reaction against it here is by edgy contrarians who read only post-modern lit for the prose, and the rest of us who read it when we were 12 and see it as sort of a kids book.

Read AS and currently finishing The Fountainhead. I really don't get the hate for these books. I get that the style is quite rough but the plot is usually very intriguing, enough to make you want to finish the book. Also the characters are kinda weak - depending on what you're looking for - but it was more refreshing than annoying.

The irrational hatred that Rand is getting seems to me a good compass to evaluate if someone is an individualist or a collectivist.

Thanks, that explains a bit, I guess I'll read The Fountainhead because of this thread. I know from past experience that I disliked essays reflecting on it. As for Atlus Shrugged I remember that it had bulky awkward dialogue like that 70 page speech sounding like a real turn off to reading it.

As for your analysis of Dune, I didn't realize it was thought of as a kids book and that makes a lot more sense now. Reading it right out of high school 3 years ago with higher expectations probably didn't help. I already had a thing for post modernism by then. Thanks your post helped a lot and so did some others.

There are just better things to read
You don't have to take a stance on everything, stop being so American

Does anyone have pictures of Rand from when she was young? I think a lot of the hate for her is that she just looks like a bitter old woman. and because she's a shit author.
