Personally I think you've got it backwards. You don't need an excuse to reduce desires, such as societal pressure. Rather you need an extraordinary excuse to preserve them once faced with the reality of how they emerge.

Your missing an important distinction between reduce and eliminate. Possibly the greatest difference between Buddhism and Taoism is the rejection of all desire, versus the rejection of a certain category of desire, respectively. If I had quoted buddhist thought we would be in agreement and could chuckle together about 'muh death-cult'.
Taoism on the other hand is affirming totally what it considers 'natural desire'. I wouldn't be surprised if a similar position would be found in your recommendation.
