I could never be with a woman like her. Maybe you're just as retarded? Or are you there just for that sweet, tasty pussy juice?
>>

Unless yours is similar ditch her.
>>

>>

>>
>>7616693
give her a russian novel as a gift, if she doesnt like it, not much you can do about it. if you can't look beyond similar interests in a relationship, then you're going to have a bad time. if you guys have trust and love and friendship built up, then you can share in some interests and dissent in others. it's no problem trying to guide her towards literature, but it's not feasible to force her into it. I know the sentiment of wanting to discuss literature with her, trying to enjoy the complex themes together in a meaningful way, but if you care enough, just explain what you can, bring her into the conversation, and she might be drawn into reading because of that. just don't cram it down her throat, or make it a chore for her. you may as well call her stupid and tell her you're assigning her a book report.
>>
OP here
She`s a wonderful person, we never run out of things to talk about, even though our interests are completely different. Is having similar interests necessary for a successful relationship? I don't think so, we've been together for more than a year.
>>
>>7616795
Thanks for the advice, friend.
>>
>>7616806
no problem, i have the same situation going on in my life. I just realized eventually that it's fine to have different opinions, and trying to force them to be more like yourself is selfish and silly. you love them because they are who they are, not what music they listen to or books they read. that's a high-school tier relationship. because when you run out of your similar interests, you realize that all you wanted was friendship, and you don't have a foundation underneath that.
>>
>>7616799
I can't be with someone if I think her interests are autistic, but that's me and I'm alone.
>>
>>7616831
What do you mean by autistic?
>>
>>7616799
Typical cuckold

Seriously though, sure it's nice to have similar interests and hobbies but the most fundamental part of any relationship is personality compatibility. You can always discuss your interests with friends, even if she never picks up a good book it doesn't make her any less a good partner so long as you enjoy each others company
>>
>>7616799
Her appearance and moral character are more important. The /lit/erary girls that I've dated were bitches and/or whores anyway. I'd kill for a nice, simple Christian girl.

yes, there are a books on there that are on my backlist but all books I read I make sure to never open the pages past 90 degrees to ensure their preservation. I take notes in a little notebook I keep on the side so that I never have to write on those soft, thickish pages.

Im sorry but It is hard for me to read a book unless it is in astounding physical condition (This only goes for fiction, as is evident with my calculus textbook). Above all else, I take great lenghts to ensure the physical appearance of my books does not wither.

After I finish reading a chapter I will flip back to the immaculate cover page to admire the little art piece and the overall color scheme; doing so greatly enhances the reading experience for me, depth and further enjoyment is added in scoops.

The edition of against nature that I own is incredible. The pages are resolute and girthy and the cover is the perfect chimera between a hardcover and a paperback. I love to simply feel the book in my hands while admiring that wonderful choice of cover art; the self-portrait by Schiele could not be more appropriate and against the black backdrop divinity is reached.

Only dilettantes who posses no aesthetic faculties or aspirations for themselves would be so base as to pretend the impression that they own as much, by bragging about their "taste" in the aesthetic merits of other, actual artists and thinkers to anonymous Chinamen on a message board.

What this thread, or 3x3 threads, or other variants whatever truly achieve is a sort of masturbation much more pitiable than any replete in the flesh; knowing you cannot create yourself, you create an impression of who you are --or rather wish to be-- through the touting of great works by legitimate writers --which you, in your vanity, bought more for their covers than contents. And it's fucking sad. You people are many times more wooden, more vacuous than your shelves you've stocked for mere appearances.

>>
>>7621075
the canon exists for a reason. i dont disagree that most people on /lit/ have shit meme taste but thats not reason to abandon the canon.

you dont have to slavishly obey the canon and work through the bloom list in order, but if you want to be serious about literature you need basic understanding and appreciation of the canon and works' context and relation to each other
>>
>>7621112

>if you want to be serious about literature

you sound dorky. jesus man read whatever the fuck you want. read Celine and Boobie and Mason and John Hawkes and Robert Musil. what you said sounds absolutely ridiculous. like some guy on /mu/ or an art snob saying "you can't appreciate [artist] without understanding [artists grouped together by critic or journalist]"

Ainda assim, vale a pena conhecer o trabalho dele.

Nah, doesn't matter. My girlfriend STILL has not read a short story I picked out for her over six months ago. Brings it on every plane we take and immediately falls asleep before takeoff.

She's patrician when she reads though, so im not sure we are in the same boat. She loves Bruno Schultz and Virgil, so that's a plus.

> Is having similar interests necessary for a successful relationship?

how can you be so stupid as to even need to ask this

did Dante and Beatrice have similar "interests"? (God doesn't count)
Did they need to?
Did Dante ever worry that maybe Beatrice isn't patrish enough to appreciate Arnaut Daniel or Virgil? Can you imagine the idea entering his head to give a shit about something like that?

Women are women. They're not cool bros, they're not peers to compare notes with.

"'Most women have no character at all,' said Pope and meant it for satire. Shakespeare, who knew man and woman much better, saw that it, in fact, was the perfection of woman to be characterless.

Every one wishes a Desdemona or Ophelia for a wife,—creatures who, though they may not always understand you, do always feel you, and feel with you." - Samuel Taylor Coleridge

I'm not saying Coleridge is exactly right, but there's a grain of truth. You don't need a cool chick. You just need to find a girl who is a good person—kind, modest, reasonable, honest, loyal, etc. (good-looking doesn't hurt, either.)

don't listen to these cucks. her taste in books shouldnt reflect in your ability to love her. for a board of people obsessed with literature and writing they sure do have a hard time explaining their ideas in text.

i imagine the concern on the behalf of this board is that somehow her literary interests being immature will reflect in her behaviour. like somehow interest in y.a fiction is a symptom of immaturity. you are the only person in this discussion who knows your girlfriend and her maturity levels so the only one capable of making a decision is you.

not everyone is interested in reading literature and that is fair enough. i bet there is a hobby your gf is into that she would not look down on you for not having an experienced taste in.

maybe she hasn't been exposed to the right book yet. you wouldn't chastise someone who had never drunk good wine for enjoying bargain bin rubbish. offer her some entry level literature and if she enjoys it that's great, but if she doesn't, it would be stupid to resent her for her taste in books alone.

you know literally nothing about dante and i'm sure you missed the entire point of the commedia, and i'm certain you haven't even read his other works

the divine comedy wasn't about "love" as you outlined in your stupid idea of romance. it was about god and religion and the sublimation of erotic desire into the acceptance of god.

dante didn't give a shit about beatrice as a person (hence my comment about him seeing her for 5 minutes mabye 3 times ever). dante loved beatrice as an ideal. beatrice doesn't feel for dante - beatrice probably doesn't even remember his fucking name.
>>
>>7630441
>dante didn't give a shit about beatrice as a person (hence my comment about him seeing her for 5 minutes mabye 3 times ever). dante loved beatrice as an ideal.

sounds like a very typical first year student's reading of Dante

I recommend you read Charles Williams' prose works on Dante—notably Romantic Theology and The Figure of Beatrice. Also you should read more about Catholic doctrine in general.

Dante loved Beatrice as a shadow of THE ideal; and if you have any knowledge of theology at all, you know that loving the beauty of Beatrice for the beauty of God is no less to love the beauty of Beatrice.

As for not caring about Beatrice's "personality", I agree inasmuch as we mean that poor and relatively recent American concept called "personality". If you mean that he wouldn't have cared if Beatrice were a nasty bitch and an hedonist, you're definitely wrong.

>the divine comedy isn't about love, it's about God
God is Love. And it's obvious that romantic love as Dante feels for Beatrice can be an earthly image of divine love.
>>
>>7630484
my mistake, somehow I thought you mentioned personality and you didn't. I take back what I said there. Must have mistakenly remembered someone else's post.
>>

i said nothing about beauty i'm saying what >>7625851 outlined about
"Did Dante ever worry that maybe Beatrice isn't patrish enough to appreciate Arnaut Daniel or Virgil? Can you imagine the idea entering his head to give a shit about something like that?"

is totally misguided

I don't disagree at all with
>Dante loved Beatrice as a shadow of THE ideal; and if you have any knowledge of theology at all, you know that loving the beauty of Beatrice for the beauty of God is no less to love the beauty of Beatrice.

and I don't see how anything I've said would've suggested that
>>
>>7630510
the problem is that you're going for a purely ideal reading of Beatrice rather than recognizing that she is not only an ideal but also a real woman whom Dante loved; that you cannot love someone as an ideal and not love them as a human being.

My point is that love, in its most exalted form, with fullest knowledge of its relation to God, is not concerned with something as mean and trivial as "having similar interests".

>To fall in love is to create a religion that has a fallible god. That Dante professed an idolatrous adoration for Beatrice is a truth that does not bear contradicting; that she once ridiculed him and another time rebuffed him are facts recorded by the Vita nuova. Some maintain that those facts are symbolic of others. If that were true, it would strengthen even more our certainty of an unhappy and superstitious love. Dante, when Beatrice was dead, when Beatrice was lost forever, played with the idea of finding her, to mitigate his sorrow. I believe that he erected the triple architecture of his poem simply to insert that encounter.

>Beatrice existed infinitely for Dante. Dante very little, perhaps not at all, for Beatrice. All of us tend to forget, put of pity, out of veneration, this grievous discord which for Dante was unforgettable. Reading and rereading the vicissitudes of their illusory meeting, I think of the two lovers that Alighieri dreamed in the hurricane of the second circle and who, whether or not he understood or wanted them to be, were obscure emblems of the joy he did not attain. I think of Paolo and Francesca, forever united in their Inferno: questi, che mai da me non fia diviso [this one, who never shall be parted from me]. With frightening love, with anxiety, with admiration, with envy, Dante must have formed that line.
