you can use dog ears to mark specific passages in books by folding it so that it points to the passage
i dont like to use it to remember where i am, but to point to interesting passages/things i should read again
if you do not carry your books around in a rucksack then in my opinion the creases are not serious damage or anything of the sort and add very much to it in my opinion
