The novella Silhouette would be a good starting point for Wolfe since it's pretty space-focused. A lot of his stuff is fantasy or horror orientated just so you know. I've heard of another novella of his called Memorare that sounds good but there are no physical copies as of yet so I haven't read it. I swam in highschool for a few years, I was pretty mediocre. Not enough motivation to really practice like I should have.

I found this an interesting read, if only for the different perspective. It's aggravating to see people failing to respond to any kind of education or good intentions.
I went to a predominantly white school in the South. About 20% of my class were interested in school, either as a means to being able to reach whatever career they wanted to pursue or for the sake of learning itself. Another 30% were kind of where I fell into: the average kids who weren't quite bright enough to really excel or who just never really cared enough to perform higher than the bare minimum out of laziness or lack of interest. The remaining 50% of the class, at least until they slowly began to drop out over time, were made up of a group of students whom I will henceforth refer to as "by gods," after a common interjection among the savages.
I was destined to become white trash as shit, but somewhere along the line, I decided I didn't really want to be that. I hated my heritage and I still do. The by gods embraced this culture. They had no interest in being at school, and they actively hated every minute of it. Our classes were usually diverse enough not to allow one particular group to dominate the population (especially once many of these students began to drop out, get arrested, or start going to trade school [which is probably solely responsible for giving them any sort of guidance or direction to speak of]). However, I once made the mistake of enrolling in Earth Science, which was the easiest science class you could take at my school. And it was easy. We didn't do anything.
Every day I watched as our teacher made desperate attempts at teaching us something about rocks or the weather. The difference between the by gods and the blacks from that article is only in the words that were used to halt the education. I will give the by gods credit. They could be creative; and it was actually entertaining in a way. Upon being introduced to the water cycle, one fellow student remarked, "I thought you called that a jayit-skeee." A brilliant young woman proclaimed with pride, "I loove the smayull uv gaayis," while our teacher attempted to explain that particular state of matter. I was by no means surprised that she enjoyed the smell of gas.
My favorite by god was constantly asking our teacher questions, though they were seldom pertinent to the topic at hand: "Hey Misturr Vick, I'm raisin' squrrils, do you wawna buy one?" "Hey Misturr Vick, how much wood yoo sayull me theyum scales fore?" After a week of begging, he eventually convinced Mr. Vick to let him "go to the bayind room to git him a git-tar," with the stipulation that he must write and perform a song about earth science. The day came and he promised his song. What he did was sit in the back of the class with the guitar and proceed to play the first few notes of every Lynyrd Skynyrd and AC/DC song he could think of. I watched Mr. Vick go to his desk and contemplate what must have been suicide.

I could tell so many dumbass stories about the two semesters I took of that class or the few others I had full of these people. The only ones that stand out in particular to me were when this one guy stuck a piece of metal in an electrical outlet, which shocked the fuck out of him and he woke up laughing his ass off. Another time this same person discovered that our substitute teacher was Jewish and covered the whiteboard in swastikas. She lost her shit and quit on the spot, vowing to never teach at our school again. To be fair, everyone hated her and this guy was viewed as a bit of a hero for this.
And we once had ONE black guy in the entire high school. I remember leaving the lunchroom one day and seeing him running for his life, admittedly faster than I think I've ever seen anyone run. What followed him was a sea of camouflage jackets and shit-stained boots screaming and promising some kind of lynching if they ever caught him.
Nearly all of those guys wound up fucking their lives up beyond recognition, but I'm glad that a few of them have gone on to work in trades or what have you.
