For me it was like, I got bored of playing video games, I got bored of watching shit television shows, and I ran out of good movies to watch. So it was either reading or actually having to go outside, easy choice.
The most serious advice I have is to make reading the thing you want to be good at. Anyone can read Redwall, few can read The Tunnel. It takes active reading, reading supplementary texts, and questioning the structure of the works you are reading.
If you get bored after an hour and a half, try writing down some notes or look up the authors life. Get up, stretch for five minutes, and try again. Don't read in bed unless you want to fall asleep, and don't give up on a book. Reading a book is a relationship between you and the text, and if you don't put in effort, you won't get anything out of it.

I always set mine to 52, not because it's how much I want to read but because it's AT LEAST how much I want to read. I use it as a limit not a goal. I figure if I can't average a book a week then I need to sort my life out.
First year I set the challenge I read like 73 I think it was. But, I was unemployed for half the year. So it wasn't really fair.
This year I was only unemployed for like 3 months and I only hit 53.
This year I'm stacking the deck because I front loaded the year with a ton of short books. Not intentionally, but it is a side effect. I'm already at 8.

There seems to be a lot of sour grapes in this thread. You can read 100 books of substance, with excellent understanding in a year if you devote your time to it.
The fact that some of you prefer to spend your time shitposting on lit, masturbating, watching TV, smoking weed and getting drunk does not mean that it is impossible.
To OP - I see no point in setting a definite goal. At best it's a poor extrinsic motivator, at worst it will guide your choice of literature towards easier works and make you try to read them faster than you ought to.
Mine's 730, but I read a lot of poetry and drama so the average length of those books is going to be 100 - 150 pages. Read as much as you want. Nothing's too low, as long as you enjoy yourself.

I don't have one. I read when I feel like it, so, given that I am not overly depressed, tired or disrupted, I read without much pressure from myself. If you don't ever feel like reading and lament the fact that you barely do, you should consider that reading isn't all that suited for you and you are most likely pressuring yourself to read perhaps out of need for intellectual validation. Or you just don't feel like it at the moment. If you don't, do something different. Lists and everything are silly, literature isn't a list that you have to go through like you would do with shopping or whatever. Focus on what you read and what you really like to read, rest is meme from people thinking that literature is somehow a trip through all le classics to make you all "well read" and opinionated on things that you won't probably make all that much sense even with all of your "knowledge" and "opinions".

2015 was 110, I was busy with my PhD thesis so that wasn't the best of ideas (ended up at 107 or so). It became too much a hunt to "finish more books" instead of enjoying reading.
2014 was 100 but I ended up at 111 because I had more time.
