what's your goal? what should be my goal? I picked 40 because that's what I estimate I would normally read-- is that too low?
>>
30. There's a 90% chance I won't even get halfway.
>>
>>7602646
I did 40 last year and hit book 40 on December 30th... I tried to bump it up to 45 this year, but I've only read one so far... Thing is, anybody could read 100 books if all they are reading is shorter works. Most of the books i read are above 150k words

>>

i want to respect that but my instincts are saying "AUTISM"
>>
>>7602699
hmm so youre averaging less than 4hrs per book.. no way you are reading anything of substance in four hours
>>
>>7602646
I've tasked myself with 40 books which is likely to be achieved since I graduate this year and likely to be unemployed for some time.

As a writer, I might as well write and read as much as I can while I have that unoccupied time.
>>
>>7602667
How do you know the word counts? Do you look it up specifically?
>>
>>7602706
nah, just don't have any other hobbies besides reading and writing. I quite video games years ago, and I only watch a movie once a week or so. I also work with a lot of people who are in small book presses, so I get tons of books and recommendations.
>>
>>7602721
I do most of my reading from an e reader (i only buy physical novels that I have read once and enjoyed)... and calibre has a function that can count the words in each book... So in my calibre library of 2000 plus novels each book lists the word count
>>
>>7602730
so chances are you can list any novel and i could give you the wordcount
>>
I went for 52, aim of one per week isn't bad when you don't have many friends and spend most evenings alone 2bh. If I enjoy a book and it's less than 300 pages, it shouldn't really take me any more than a couple of days.
>>
One hundred this year.
>>
>>7602730

Even if you were averaging five hours per day (which of course you would have mentioned in attempt to impress us) your average time per book would still be about 3 and a half hours. Faggot

>>7602856
I genuinely love books and reading, not sure why that is hard for you to believe. I can very easily read a PKD or Lem or Vonnegut book in about 4 hours, and still comprehend it. I take pretty extensive notes on everything I read.
>>
>>7602955
I believe you, I believe you... I have the time to read that much but can't seem to overcome the hour or hour and a half mark where I lose focus and am unable to continue reading.... any tips for overcoming this?

someone should post the read every day pasta.

For me it was like, I got bored of playing video games, I got bored of watching shit television shows, and I ran out of good movies to watch. So it was either reading or actually having to go outside, easy choice.

The most serious advice I have is to make reading the thing you want to be good at. Anyone can read Redwall, few can read The Tunnel. It takes active reading, reading supplementary texts, and questioning the structure of the works you are reading.

If you get bored after an hour and a half, try writing down some notes or look up the authors life. Get up, stretch for five minutes, and try again. Don't read in bed unless you want to fall asleep, and don't give up on a book. Reading a book is a relationship between you and the text, and if you don't put in effort, you won't get anything out of it.
>>

Richard's micro-penis was hard again. It would serve as an ugly reminder never to undress in front of the mirror again. The way the winter wind felt upon his erect nipples, he knew the cream would soon curdle and he licked his lips in anticipation. Boris' birthday beats would be brilliant, he concluded, whipping his legs into shape and his son, producing the effect of a transmorphic rectangular prism that refracted the idea of his off-colour offspring into the melt dimension, singing his afro pubes. His eyes trickle outwards to the melodic beats of Lionel Ritchie, the Aztec god of Samba - doubly delicious
>>
I always set mine to 52, not because it's how much I want to read but because it's AT LEAST how much I want to read. I use it as a limit not a goal. I figure if I can't average a book a week then I need to sort my life out.

First year I set the challenge I read like 73 I think it was. But, I was unemployed for half the year. So it wasn't really fair.

This year I was only unemployed for like 3 months and I only hit 53.

This year I'm stacking the deck because I front loaded the year with a ton of short books. Not intentionally, but it is a side effect. I'm already at 8.

What's the word count in Anna Karenina (p&v edition)?
>>
Targeting # of books is stupid. It counts doorstoppers and novellas the same. Instead, target pages read per day.

But yeah 40 is relatively low.
>>
There seems to be a lot of sour grapes in this thread. You can read 100 books of substance, with excellent understanding in a year if you devote your time to it.

The fact that some of you prefer to spend your time shitposting on lit, masturbating, watching TV, smoking weed and getting drunk does not mean that it is impossible.

To OP - I see no point in setting a definite goal. At best it's a poor extrinsic motivator, at worst it will guide your choice of literature towards easier works and make you try to read them faster than you ought to.

Mine's 730, but I read a lot of poetry and drama so the average length of those books is going to be 100 - 150 pages. Read as much as you want. Nothing's too low, as long as you enjoy yourself.

I've read 7, probably 10 by the end of the month.
It would average more than the goal I set but I go back to college in march...
>>
I don't have one. I read when I feel like it, so, given that I am not overly depressed, tired or disrupted, I read without much pressure from myself. If you don't ever feel like reading and lament the fact that you barely do, you should consider that reading isn't all that suited for you and you are most likely pressuring yourself to read perhaps out of need for intellectual validation. Or you just don't feel like it at the moment. If you don't, do something different. Lists and everything are silly, literature isn't a list that you have to go through like you would do with shopping or whatever. Focus on what you read and what you really like to read, rest is meme from people thinking that literature is somehow a trip through all le classics to make you all "well read" and opinionated on things that you won't probably make all that much sense even with all of your "knowledge" and "opinions".
>>
>>7603588
Do you read them aloud? How many times each?
>>
>>7603621
Occasionally, and once for plays, twice for poetry.
>>
This year: 80.

2015 was 110, I was busy with my PhD thesis so that wasn't the best of ideas (ended up at 107 or so). It became too much a hunt to "finish more books" instead of enjoying reading.

2014 was 100 but I ended up at 111 because I had more time.

80 is a good goal I guess, enough books to read, and no stress from "you gotta finish more!!!"
>>
>>7603602
Remember the time when you read for curiosity and entertainment, rather than skimming the reviews of classics to be as pedantic as possible? ye me neither.
>>
>>7603632
Last week, actually. Someone posted a thread relating to this play, Erasmus Montanus, and I found the play rather silly and at times entertaining. Like that one part where this supposedly educated man claimed to know Greek liturgy by saying, I'm paraphrasing, "An, yes, even now I recall that it ends with Amen". to impress these peasant small folk. Fun read fàm.

I did 40 last year, but decide to put 30 this year because I'm also learning another language and want to savour my reads. I'm feeling way better and probably will go beyond 40 because of this. Don't treat this like a race, just do it when you feel like it.
