You know, I'm sure the resident artfags will tell me why I have the sensibility of an eight-year-old, but I think this is actually quite brilliant, provided it's an actual painting and not just a cheap photographic effect. The anachronistic tension between (apparently pretty talented) photorealistic painting and the cheesy but comfortingly familiar 90s music video nightlife aesthetic is pretty new to me; it seems to bring the "high" and the "low," the new art (i.e. photography and cinematography) and the old art, into an unstable union more successfully than other, more complicated allegorical paintings have. That said, I can't say I can recommend a book, because I know of no book that has done quite that. I think quite a number have tried, but none have actually done it in a compelling and unique way.
