I haven't read it but I read somewhere that he barely uses any footnotes in his work and that it is largely an interpretation of what he believes to be true. Which I guess everyone does, but Varg's insights seem to be more based on personal gut and instinct, feeling, than rationality. This is something I've read or heard though. I haven't personally read the book though I intend to one day.

The problem with saying that Burzum is the best of black metal is that he is so atypical of the genre. Also the only good thing he ever did was Hvis lyset tar oss. Everything leading up to it was just that, leading up to it, and everything that came after was an anti-climax. It's the only album where he shows any ability to write music with anything other than the most basic structure.
