Reading commentaries about the text before the text itself is a silly idea to begin with; prefaces and introductions should always be read last. There may be exceptions, but I can't think of any.
Sometimes even footnotes and endnotes can spoil the story though.

I know some of you would rather read David Foster Wallace's annotated grocery lists than anything with suspense and a twist ending, but plots are important, no matter what contrarian snobs say.
