I don't think it matters, if you have an innate interest in literature you will get around the reading the books you 'need' to read and reading one of them sooner than later I don't think will make too much of a difference.
Instead if you wanted to make the most of your reading particularly before you're twenty, pick a particular topic and study it in depth, or begin learning a language.

No. They're not that hard. The Odyssey exists in many easier to understand translations and it's like 300 pages. For non-genre fiction fans it should be easy. Is this bait? These were taught in high school.

The difficulty of the Odyssey and the Iliad depend entirely on your translation; Chapman or Cowper may be more of a challenge for an inexperienced reader, but if you've got Fagles or some shit then it's no problem.
Plato isn't hard to read either; the Symposium and the Republic are both easily comprehensible by someone younger than 20.
Shakespeare is part of high school curricula. Pretty much everyone who has a western education has read Shakespeare before 20. It's not hard either, you just need to get used to some slightly older English.

This. I admit I have a little regret that I didn't do more reading in my teens/20's but I have done so much of it in my 30's that I feel pretty up to speed as if I had read all of this stuff when I was younger.
Even now I have a huge leg-up on most people I know in their 50's-70's. I know one guy who didn't start seriously reading until his late 40's.
