My library is privately endowed and on a small rural network, it has nothing I want, otherwise it would be 1.
used books almost always. Goodwill and Amazon marketplace are where it's at.
New
buying old books. In the social department stores (is this the right word) nice editions that once cost about 20 Euros are sold for 50 cent, I've got most of my books from there. I always get the books I want, I just have to wait and always browse thoroughly.
New books. I like to read in bed knowing some role hasn't laid their hands on it.

I always buy new books if possible, but I browse used book stores looking for well kept books.
There is something literary about spending your last 10 dollars on a couple books at a used book store.
I do it far too often. Once I bought a $14 book on my credit card...It was the only thing I used it for and then I forgot about it for a while. Anyway, I got a statement a year later saying I owed $43.
