List books written after the internet was invented that critique consumerism, instant gratification, and advocate asceticism.

I want to cut myself off from the internet and spend the rest of my life studying. I want to get to the point where I put ashes on my food in order to dull the taste so I don't commit the sin of gluttony.

It seems as if this belief system is dead. The only recent pieces of "art" that I have found advocating this are the movie "Black Snake Moan" which I really thought would be a soft-core porno. It turns out it is a very decent movie, and a little different from the "be yourself" bullshit preached in most movies. I almost think that the marketing was bad on purpose so that people wouldn't see it, because it might cause people to think a little bit more about indulging their desires.

I found some Christian blog on the internet that was condemning sin written by this very attractive 20something girl, but she continually deletes my comments on her blog asking for advice, so I have decided to leave her alone and come here.

"Society of the Spectacle" was written before the internet but is still probably the best answer.

Mass Media no longer holds the same sway over the populous that it used to. It used to be a moderating influence. The internet seems to have radicalized everyone.

Infinite Jest fits to a good degree

The only reason you think that is because it is the only book you have ever read.

>"be yourself" bullshit preached in most movies

You don't sound like you watch a lot of them

Oh, only about 99% of fiction.

>I want to get to the point where I put ashes on my food in order to dull the taste so I don't commit the sin of gluttony.
Because acting like God himself cares about your eating habits isn't narcissistic at all.

>It turns out it is a very decent movie, and a little different from the "be yourself" bullshit preached in most movies
If "be yourself" is bullshit, shouldn't you drop your self-absorbed "asceticism" thing and start participating in popular culture?

The underlying values of Californian society are that you should always act in accordance to your own desires. It is really rare for a movie to say that maybe being a slut is a bad thing, especially when you are cheating on your Marine boyfriend.

There is a difference between acting in accordance with your inner-passions and acting according to principles which you set for yourself. You did not choose your desires, so choosing to follow them is making you a slave to them.

If you are acting in direct opposition to your desires then you are acting according to a principle which you have set for yourself. In this instance you are acting freely.

Even if you don't believe in god you should still avoid sin.

The "be yourself" stuff is usually advocating doing what you feel like doing. If you like art because you find it enjoyable, then you should do it. The problem with this philosophy is that it involves asking oneself the question, "what do I want", rather than "what type of person do I want to be". Each action shapes the performer. Acting in accordance with ones desires turns the person into something with no inner restraint powerful enough to overcome his/her base desires. They end up being a slave to them, and hence living an existence unfit for a human being.

If instead you decide to study art because you value art, and want to become a great artist, then you are acting in accordance with a principle that you set for yourself. When you have other desires to relax, or sleep in, you will fight them for the end goal of turning yourself into a great artist. In this instance you are resisting the passions that don't align with your end goal.
Avoiding sin is how you become someone who is worth something. It is your constant indulgences that destroy you.

I haven't read that book. I bet that it is good. The only reason I said that was because every single thread on this board somehow mentions that book. It is like /lit/s bible. Quit pushing it on me.

Look mate, there are a lot more movies than the ones supporting the Californian lifestyle. Get out of that shell.

Yes, around here IJ is something of a victim of its own success, being mentioned as often as it is. But it gets mentioned so much because of how good (a lot of us here think) it is. Its relevance to OP includes how various kinds of entertainment/consumption/instant gratification can be harmful, and the main act of heroism in the book involves a kind of zen-like self-denial.
