I've been gone from the States for five years, and now I'm back. Starting community college again next week. What should I expect? Do people actually use words like "shitlord"?

Majoring in philosophy.

Not looking to make a fortune. Just planning to work in ESL in gookland like my other friends. They're doing pretty well for themselves, and having a great time.
>>
>>7560679
Are you saying I will have to actually study that shit?
>>
If you're going to major in philosophy, read Bertrand Russel's History of Western Philosophy
>>
>majoring in philosophy at a secular university
My Alma Mater, which I am returning to, is 1/40th the size of its parent university but it's philosophy program makes its parent look like an American community college.

Because it's still a Lutheran university.

The same is true for its Catholic faculty; about 1/45th the size but has a baller philosophy program whereas the parent only has variety.
>>
>>7560785
so you think i should transfer to a catholic uni? doesnt sound like a bad idea at all

which school did you study at?
>>
>>7560753
you think im new to this game, nigga?
>>
>>7560802

if you're transferring out of community college for philosophy, pick a school off of philosophicalgourmet.com, unless you're not into that whole western analytic tradition. Catholic school costs too much.
>>
College is a meme.
>>
>>7560829
thanks for the advice.

i would say continental has some of the greatest, but is filled with too much shit

analytic on the whole is more respectable

4chan is a meme

is 4chan college?
>>
>>7560642
How old are you? What is your financial status?
I majored in philosophy, but mainly because college is free here. I don't think I would have gotten into debt for that degree.
>>
>>7560864
financial status = poor as dirt, so practically guaranteed i wont have to pay for my schooling

im getting paid by the gov to study in community college

poor privelage is real

im 25

I've been at a CC for a year and a half. I recently got accepted to a really good university though and I'm transferring there in September. That being said, I've noticed that my CC is full of fucking idiots. Typical middle class-upper middle class morons who cry about privilege, oppression, believe quite possibly everything in the media and have hissy fits when their perfect idea of the world is threatened. Overall, get out of there as soon as you can and major in something where you can hopefully avoid a lot of the identity politics and biased professors.

do you think philosophy would be full of idiots? because studies show that philosophy majors have the some of the highest iqs. the idiots i think tend to get filtered out pretty quickly due to the amount of abstract thinking required by philosophy.
>>
>>7560829
the website you linked is down btw. what is it exactly?
>>
>>7560950

I think that upper level philosophy courses are probably more constructive, interesting, and full of people who have differing views but would create interesting, thought provoking debate. The lower level/intro courses however are undoubtedly full of idiots.

I took political philosophy, got an A. And while I loved my professor, every single person in the class with the exception of this one communist Chinese guy was unbearable. Especially the white girls and South East Asian tumblr SJW's. You could just tell that my professor, a pretty cool traditional socialist, wanted to kill himself. I actually felt sorry for him.
>>
>>7560978
that's crazy. before i left the country 5 years ago i remember we would briefly mention things like "feminist" or "marxist" analysis, but most students came in hardly having a clue what that was. it sounds like shit has changed a lot. has SJWism totally taken over?
>>
>>7560978
also important: can i get in trouble over political incorrectness? how far can i take it
>>
>>7560802
Catholic uni a best I didn't go to private school ever and I couldn't picture myself anywhere else, they're usually pretty close nit which I find nice.
>>
>>7560994

SJWism has infected the liberal arts. Mostly political science, philosophy, English literature, stuff like that . I myself am studying psychology and I'm transferring into a neuroscience and cognition program, and so far every psychology course I have taken has been pretty politically neutral. Most of the courses I have taken have focused on abnormal psychology, cognition, health, research, statistical data analysis, stuff like that. But even in psychology, there are certain fields/courses that have obvious political bias and are full of SJW's (social psych, cross cultural psych, etc). It's a fucking embarrassment.

You can definitely get in trouble over political incorrectness. If you say something really politically incorrect, you might get asked to leave the class or the professor might have a word with you, not to mention the SJW's will probably crucify you in some way.

I personally consider myself fairly socialist/leftist but not in the new liberal sense.

Picture related. My classes are full of the middle column types.
>>
>>7560642
CC student here. Except no social life and subpar academics. Most of the professors teach from a textbook.

At least it's cheap I'm so poor

>not knowing that this is one of the best majors to get into law school
>not knowing that it's also one of the highest paid non-stem bachelor's in a job market where stem jobs are quickly approaching a point where everyone needs a master's

fucking engineers

>>7560829
>>7560841
"catholic school costs too much" is one of the most wrong things i've heard today

they offer so many fucking scholarships (st john's offers 10k/year to basically everyone) and they're usually cheaper than other private schools in the area
>>
>>7561035

I'm not that anon but law school sucks. It has lost a lot of its prestige and unless you graduate in like the top 10% of your class from a top 20 school and make connections, you probably won't make as much money as you think. The law field is oversaturated now and many grads from mid tier law schools are actually lucky to find a job making like 50k.
>>
>>7561045
you're not wrong, but the same thing is happening for basically everyone with a master's. job market isn't what it was in the 90s.

that said, people who go "lol philosophy guess u wanna be poor" are almost definitely comparing it to stem majors, and since most philosophy undergrads actually make pretty good money and the job market for stem majors sucks pretty bad too
>>
>>7561062

Yeah STEM autists are morons. STEM is a huge 4chan meme actually. I've known plenty of people with BSc's in Engineering, chemistry, bio and other sciences who can't find jobs.
>>
>>7560642
Hi. I'm studying philosophy at uc Berkeley in ca, minoring in math and minoring in physics. I don't know your level of familiarity with philosophy, or what you want to learn about (within philosophy) but the absolute best place to start is with Frege. Russell is out of fashion, haha. Become intimate with Freges foundations of arithmetic and other philosophical writings. This is not because he is "right" about all or any subject, but much of contemporary philosophy finds inspiration in his work. It's a useful Archimedean point to move from. And work your way through a first-order logic textbook, like Language, Proof, and Logic by barwise and Etchemendy.
>>
>>7561045
is there any job market that isn't over saturated?
>>
>>7561114

Medicine, dentistry, certain fields of engineering. I've never met a nurse or dental hygienist who had trouble finding work either. If I recall correctly, I believe bioinformatics is a booming field as well.
>>
>>7560973
Works for me. It's a ranking of university philosophy programs done by practicing philosophers. Covers only English-speaking programs. It gives a general ranking of programs as well as a ranking by department specialty.
>>
>>7561092

>Frege
Says the math student.

Instead, get your feet wet with Plato and the philosophic issues that infect all subsequent work rather than diving right into Frege's sweet, sweet niche.
>>
>>7561186

Schopenhauer is the only philosopher worth a damn. But prior to that one should read Kant to understand him more.
>>
>>7560691
holy fuck pick me up and save me.
>>
>>7561186
Philosophy first, before math, friend. Plato, and sadly everyone right up until right after Kant, did not have any interesting things to say about logic that has any real bearing on contemporary analytic philosophy (in my undergrad-tier opinion). Plato is historically interesting, but if you want to 'philosophize' and not get stuck in the trenches of just reading history, Frege is the most versatile springboard to subjects from math, sure, but also to linguistics, logic, and even some interesting "continental" subjects. Characterizing Frege as niche is not philosophical thing to do in itself. Shame on you, haha.
>>
>>7560642
I dropped out I should go back, right? I feel like I need to, I'm too embrassed to go back to where I was which is the only school I can see myself at.
>>
>>7561235
No one will care besides insecure administration clerks, do what you want with your life.
>>
>>7561209

You're right about Frege, I suppose. When I read Frege in school it was for philosophy of language and 20th century analytics with a bent towards epistemological issues. I guess what I'm trying to get at is that to work with Frege is to bend towards a certain branch of philosophizing while Platonic dialogues have set up a lot of the questions we ask and attempt to answer over and over again. Sure, dive right into Frege and take the train through Russell to Wittgenstein and up to Kripke (because that's as far as an undergrad usually goes). But that's a certain trajectory of thought and adds its own flavor when reading through the lens of this particular conceptual framework. Suggesting Plato is merely a way by which someone could identify a variety of philosophic issues that are still discussed (whether or not they are citing Plato).

>Do people actually use words like "shitlord"?
Oh Jesus, I was laughing my ass off. I go to CC and I have a bunch of really top notch profs. I'm pretty much halfway through and my advice is to get your degree before you go on to transfer to a good school, that way you will have something to show for your time. It would especially suck to transfer into your dream school and drop out (or whatever, can't afford it, etc.) with nothing to show for it, I've seen it happen. If you can, try to work your way into your CC's honors program, in my experience the classes are tougher and more on par with the workload of a 4 year school. One thing I find tough is if you are in an unenthusiastic classroom environment then sometimes the whole course sucks, so I would say that you will get out what you put into it. Hope that helped, Anon.

X is Z, and
Y is Z, this does not mean
X is Y
>>
>>7560802
Yes, essentially it would be best to study at a school with a focus rather than a passing interest.
>>
>>7561402
Do you know what the transitive property is?
>>
>>7561513
Transitivity doesn't work with predicates like that. 4chan and college share the quality of meme, but they are not identical. My car is not identical to my laptop because they both happen to share the same color.
