Fantastic.
I loved it translated---I have the Elsworth edition, but I do intend on buying and rereading through the other two big translations (McDuff and Maguire/Malmstad).

It's really a toss-up, unlike with a lot of other great works that have a definitive translation (e.g. Guerney for Gogol's "Dead Souls," Davis for Flaubert), it's truly a toss-up. Elsworth does not have any annotations while M/M has, from what I've heard, a large amount of very detailed notes, if that helps you decide at all.

21, and I'm not an English major or anything so I just kinda pick books up here and there.
>>
>>7548130
That's cool. I do the same although I'm struggling to care about Runaway Horses at the moment.

I finished Toole before it and Bukowski before that, which is probably why your list stuck out. I liked A Confederacy of Dunces less the ending, and didn't really care for Ham on Rye. To each their own.
>>
>>7548146
I just like Bukowski because he's ugly and his life sounds so shitty and yet he has a good time and fucks a lot. The simple things, you know.

How old are you?
>>
>>7548161
25

I didn't read much for leisure until the last couple years.

Ham on Rye seemed like the odd one out on your list. Not very humorous besides a few quips, but if you liked it, consider Ask the Dust by Fante.
>>
>>7548028
Gurney only translated "Dead Souls," as far as I know. And as for his short stories, I've only ever checked out the P&V collection, so I cannot comment on the quality of the already limited options.

I read the book when I was in jail and I couldn't put it down. The book grabbed hold of me. I can't speak for his other work but that book in particular I love, it's like a love letter to pulp.
