As every newfag, I didn't know I could use 4chan to find good productive stuff like /lit/. I honestly thought that YA literature was somethig smart and insightful before I got to this board.
Need some good books/authors recommendations on where to start. I recently started reading some of Nietzsche's works and really liked the Übermensch concept.
I've been thinking about reading some of Proust's works as well, but those are the must read ones that everyone knows.

Start with the Greeks.

This. Don't listen to any other answer.

And why is that?

All philosophy since Plato has been one long footnote.
Here OP.
Always start with the Greeks.
>>7534697
Start with the Greeks, but read these for some variation.

The Bible. Regardless of whether you believe it it has good philosophical parables/ discussions.
A different starter kit I've seen around here.

I don't get that chart. Noone talks about those on here. Why even make it?
Get a goodreads and add people from here--it's useful for finding good books to read.
Go in some chart threads as well and read what interests you.
If you're interested in philosophy, read 'The Story of Philosophy' by Bryan Magee.
Starting with the Greeks is good. Fitzgerald is a good translator of Homer.

Swap the Odyssey with the Iliad, and change a few of the translations, then it gets an official thumbs up.

Pessoa?
Look at higher education programs to help you find good translations and secondary lit (on philosophy for example) in Portuguese.
where to after greeks other than that /lit/ chart? russians?

if you're interested in philosophy, you can either get on with china or with middle aged christians or skip straight to hume-kant-hegel
if you're interested in prose, just go wherever
in poetry, probably get on with the poetic edda and chaucer and shakespeare

Tried reading the Divine Comedy in a Portuguese from Portugal translation and it was just painful, have to stick with the Brazilian Portuguese version anyway.

the romans were trash and produced maybe 4 worthwhile authors if you're being generous, 2 if you're honest

Don't just quote Whitehall out of the blue,
OP, you should start with the Greeks if you're interested in Western Philosophy, as they basically set the foundation for the next 2,000 years of discussion on ethics and metaphysics. Now, most modern philosophers disagree a great deal with some of their teachings, but crucially, they are continually responding to the original source material and building on it. That's not to say the Greeks were wrong either, in fact, they were incredibly astute thinkers.

It's decent "entry level" /lit/ that's a comfortable read that helps introduce you to more classical themes. But /lit/ talks about Catch 22, Lolita, Gatsby, BNW and Catcher in the Rye a lot, and all those other books will be mentioned over the week - it's just a slow board and people tend to push more "university" level books.
