I just tell people it's about a paedophile who becomes romantically obsessed with a 12 year old. Why?
>>
Had a discussion about this book yesterday and my younger brother asked what it's about. I told him it's a more human portrayal of a paedophile who falls hopelessly for a 12 year old girl and that the book, while unsettling, is also surprisingly rational about the whole thing and is beautifully written (I still love the description Humbert gives about how his legs felt like reflections of legs in water when he first saw Lolita).

My brother asked what the name of the book was, I told him and he said it was gay that a book like that would be called "Lol Eater." He legitimately said this because he's 18 years old and that's still a pretty dumb age.

I just bought this book today, it's the Penguin version with the stupid generic orange cover.

Hopefully people don't think I'm reading a children's book and then when they ask what I'm reading I'd have t tell them it's about a guy who wants to fuck his 13 year old step-daughter.

it teaches you how to infiltrate pre-schools and girl's dormitories. Your first mission is to steal a sweaty knee sock, discarded from the morning's tennis lesson by a young nymph. You lust penetrate a respectable Hampshire girl's boarding school undetected and pull out without any help.

>>
>>7531846
yeah but over on /tv/ the good stuff gets treated like shit, so I was just wondering. Normally I don't hear /lit/ being called a bad board though, so I guess that makes sense. I will pick it up, thank you
>>
>>7531849
That's because it's /tv/, they've got good taste in movies but not in literature.

It's a very good book, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
>>
>>7531854
>
>>
>>7531849
it takes more effort and time to read a book than to watch a movie, so people will be more sincere and interested on having a conversation about those 12 or more hours of their life than that hour and a half they spent while eating or fapping. It also brings more sincerity to the table since you are more invested.
>>
>>7532265
If you think that /tv/ has anything above pleb-tier taste, then you should leave.

Doesn't work as a comparison. Reading fiction about drug addiction isn't viewed as a sign of drug addiction, as it is a common subject of "overcoming hardship" stories.
Reading a story that tells, in great detail, and with poetic prose, about kidnapping and repeatedly molesting a 13 year old girl, on the other hand, is understandably viewed as a potential red flag.

Should I avoid watching Kubrick's Lolita before I read Nabokov's, or would he say I was a pleb for reading for the plot?
>>
overrated novel about a wimpy pedo
>>
Lolita is about love and unhealthy obsession. There's literally nothing more to it. It was written in an age of taboo and that's how it made it's fame. Lolita is a product of one man's perversion in an age long past, an age of indecency and literary misfits, an age of miracles.
>>
>>7533044

Exactly this problem. I just kind of stammered on about Greek parallels and stream of consciousness.
