Rendezvous with Rama. It's about exploring and there's (almost) no conflict, it's just really comfy.

>I'm a Russian cosmonauta; I can program these super-duper robots that never break down or screw up in just a day!
>Muh potluck economics
>Look at all these different cultures working together without much hiccups!
>OMG WE'RE A UTOPIA NOW AND 40 MILLION PEOPLE NOW LIVE ON CRETE!
>corporations are evil!
>we all mixed race now
>eat this perchlorate-enriched dirt for my gaia-religion so we can run out into the middle of nowhere with minimal supplies that will somehow last us years!
>super-helix-diamond space tether!
>dude we invented a cure for aging in our lab!
>we're all 7 ft now because someone didn't tell the author that people are only a couple inches taller off the Earth due to less spinal compression, not because gravity is stopping their bones from growing
>hard sci-fi
Not hard enough. Nonetheless, I liked the Mars Trilogy quite a bit although I thought the series steadily declined after the first book. On an unrelated note, KSR definitely has a femdom fetish.
I really like the Martian even though the dust storm was entirely unrealistic. A 300 kph wind would feel like a breeze at .06 Bar.

No need to hedge your bets against peer pressure, if you like it, you like it.
