I think that Shakespeare work, when considered as a whole, is superior to Tolstoy's work, and yet Tolstoy is the only other writer who can face Shakespeare face to face. He was a giant, a genius, there is no doubt about that.
Yet is hard to compare works of art. The Marriage of Figaro is sublime, and so it i the 9th shymphony (it is my favorite work of art, I guess, even more than the last quartests of Beethoven and the Missa Solemnis). And what about the Sistine Chapel frescoes? Have you ever read about how much work, how much will and blood and seat it took to complete them, and when you look at them...what divinity...
One phrase that I love (and that can be aplied to W&P) is this one:
