That may sound like hyperbole, or abstract nonsense. Let's get concrete. The plain fact is that you graduating seniors do not yet have any clue what "day in day out" really means.

Every once in a while I just get a little sad thinking about all the DFW we missed out on, and everything he missed out on.
There is some alternate universe where DFW wrote an essay on bernie sanders and I'm sad I'm not in it. Some coverage from him on this election would have been fantastic
I live in Amherst and maybe, when he was older, he would have come to settle down with us. It's all old professors here.
>>
>>7528993
this is so pathetic, sad and true at the same time

He followed the McCain campaign in 2000.
>>
>>7529042
Just because sanders won't be the dem nominee doesn't mean DFW would have something interesting to say about his campaign.
As I see it, sanders not receiving the nomination is far more interesting than if he were to receive it. It forces you to accept how far gone the US political system is, and how capable Establishment is at rigging these sort of things without outright rigging anything.
Now, I'm not saying that's what DFW would have written about, but I'm sure he would have something profound to say about the whole campaign. Sanders seems to be someone who "sees the forest through the trees", a quality that DFW always tried to impress onto others.
>>

If he'd survived and continued to work on The Pale King and actually finished it... I can imagine myself going to Barnes & Noble on the day it came out. Going inside on a chill November morning and walking up to the storefront New Releases display and seeing that glorious 1,000-pp. brick of a novel propped up on a clear plastic stand. Completely finished. It appears almost to kind of glow. The follow-up to Infinite Jest. The third novel by David Foster Wallace. His first since 1996. The reviews have been outstanding. The Pale King. Holy shit. Here it is, finally, in my hands. The title's letters on the dust jacket are gold and raised and they shimmer when you tilt the book back and forth. I brush my fingers over the edge of the pages and watch the pages fly by and I peer into it as if I'm reading it in fast-motion. I compose myself and open to the first page. "Past the flannel plains..." The text is set not in the normal-sized Baskerville of our universe but in the same style Infinite Jest was set: same typeface, same tiny size. There are footnotes everywhere. An old woman approaches the display and inspects a copy for a few moments and then moves on. I take a look at the author photo on the dust jacket's back flap. It's Dave. Fifty years old and smiling in California. Below it tells me that David Foster Wallace is the author of Infinite Jest and much else. He's a recipient of the MacArthur Grant. It says he lives in California with his wife. He lives.

the troubling thing about it is his editor said he was the happiest she'd even seen him, his decision to go off the anti-depressant was what killed him. so preventable
>>
theres a serious irony to the DFW love, its kinda sad because while he obviously wanted to be loved, i think he kinda wanted everyone to hate him when he died. if you really understand what he's trying to say you'd see that he wanted you to conflicted and ask yourself why he would've done that

alot of people i guess arent able to really take that plunge and see that a real serious inner nastiness was probably involved, one which he was at least aware of and probably would've preferred you were too

whether or not they were significant or relevant is another thing, but its pretty clear he did really care what people who werent listening (aka the masses) were thinking and this was in a way a means of reaching them that evidently wasnt effective...

but then again we are still talking about him here more than anyone else today, the author of 2 books who hasnt worked on a thing in more than 10 years

i also question your understanding of why anyone does anthing, least of all a private someone in the public splotlight
>>
>>7529163
He's stated that his cold war political beliefs and post-9/11 political beliefs were different. During the cold war, he feared a nuclear exchange between the US and USSR. After seeing the US's misguided reaction to 9/11, he feared the American people continuing down this path of imperialism and general disregard towards the rest of the world.
And from a higher perspective, one would assume that he would be in favor of moving away from our current oligarchy, and as Sanders is the first candidate to offer that in quite some time, I wouldn't imagine him favoring any other candidate.

>>7530559

I never claimed to understand why he did it, and I completely agree %100 that we will never be able to understand why he did what he did.

However, the thought of people reducing his suicide to yet another carrier move, something he wanted, something to subject to literary analysis, is disgusting...

He was a human being, after all. I know people have trouble empathizing with those they idolize, but you can't write off his depression that quickly. That's one of the worst parts of depression, people will do anything they can to ignore it, complicated literary mental gymnastics included.

"Killing myself will get people's attention and once I'm dead they'll care" Is a thought that I would attribute to a 14-year-old. I hope that people would think more of DFW than that.

Or would you rather think his suicide was some sort of message for y o u to analyze and consume?

Ben Bernanke, President (?) of the Federal Reserve of the US, makes extremely complex mathematical models of the economy. He and his predecessor have acknowledged their limitations, but they remain the primary structure of our economy.
>>
>>7530615
And you seriously posted a video of some fox news anchor ripping apart some retarded undergrad to represent everyone who shares that sentiment? Again, 0/10 annon. I 100% agree, "democrats" are pretty retarded, but so are republicans. I'm not a fan of free healthcare (the government could not POSSIBLY handle running our healthcare system) and I don't really give a shit about free public college, but if you think that's all his platform is (or even a significant part of his platform) then you are pretty poorly informed, and I encourage you to look further in to it than when media outlets let circulate.

And nice chart there, even though every other candidate (except trump) is doing their best to guzzle corperate scrotum to maximize donations, bernie's received the 5th most donations. That madman doesn't even have a super-PAC

The underlying axiom of all neoclassical theory is the idea of scarcity. In today's world, scarcity is often an artificial construct to benefit a few producers. Yet, neoclassical models are continually used.

Perhaps 'proving a theory false' was not what I haf in mind. I was merely trying to explain that economics is not always as it seems; this facade is arguably intentional.
