I agree OP, these books are fantastic.

What is YA?
What are the age limits of the category?
Does it relate to reading age or actual age? What's the next category up and what age span does it encompass?
Who decides and on what criteria what does and does not go in this category (the author, the reviewer, the publisher, the readership (so after the fact))?

Any answers?

I slogged through the series and can not fathom the praise it gets.

The teenage market

It refers to teenagers, more specifically 13-17 year olds. The next is just "adult" (not to be confused with Adult novels which is just porn for women.)

The publishers, by hiring authors that they know will appeal to the teenage market.

Actually, the next is "new adult"

I dunno 8 year old me found the first icemark book pretty dope.
Also you forgot redwall.

But there are books that appeal to the next market that don't particularly appeal to say the over 40s, so adult is perhaps not entirely true.

Not bad.

The reason I ask this is because I am in my forties and there are books that appealed to me when I was in my twenties for instance that are largely dead to me now, even to the point of not reading or wanting to read similar books. But that might be just the boredom of familiarity I accept. However there are books I read now, more biographical/history perhaps but nonetheless fiction as well, which I would have understood differently and taken different things from twenty years ago. The difficulty again is what is this, familiarity or growth of the mind to see a different field of view, not necessarily deeper but perhaps wider and one that can now discount that which was more real to me years ago through experience?

The second two books sharply decline in quality. The third literally has a spaceship that takes you "where you want to go" which is probably the laziest plot device ever imagined. The only real difference between it and current YA stuff is that they hadn't yet figured out to force love triangles into everything yet.
