Like wearing glasses without the lense. Art is an extension of the artist: it is interpretation of reality externalised; and, therefore, it is essential to critical analysis of the art.
If you're writing a first draft and know in detail the "philosophical themes" it will be shit. All great writers use thought in service of aesthetic, style, and character, not the other way around. This is why IJ is average.
