Why did so many prominent modernists become fascists?

Eliot, Lawrence and Pound are the ones that spring to mind, though I'm sure there are more. Filippo Marinetti didn't even 'become' a fascist -- he preempted Mussolini and made Italy's modernists (Futurists) fascist by design.

Why?
>>
Massification was the most prominent and most repulsive aspect of the modern zeitgeist they were championing for other reasons, and they wanted to find ways to deal with it

Eliot wasn't a fascist, he volunteered as a fire warden during the Blitz in London during WWII.

Pound was a massive fascist AND invented Modernism, so it just appears that lots of Modernists were fascists.

>Eliot wasn't a fascist, he volunteered as a fire warden during the Blitz in London during WWII.

lol That wouldn't exclude him from being a fascist

Because they knew.

Can /lit/ explain in /lit/'s word what fascism implies please? I would go to /pol/ but it's full of memes.

This seems the most likely, but also the emasculating effects of high capitalism.

The atomic family on a national scale.
A socialism based on individual productivity.
The Pareto principle epitomized.

I don't think he singlehandedly invented modernism, but his influence on the whole of it is certainly profound.

because they were smart guys who saw what was coming and figured they had to put a stop to it. Even the ones who weren't full fascist, like Woolf or Eliot, were pretty redpilled to a certain extent. the main reason why Literature and culture have gone down the drain in postmodern times, has to do with the abandonment of modernist ideals for victim-worship and ressentiment

BTW, Celine wrote extensively and eloquently about the Jewish question, y'all should check out his pamphlets

Postmodernism is only shit because modernism was already terrible.

It implies at least these.
>autocratic government, almost always totalitarian
>anticommunist
>anticapitalist
>pro-war
>pro-imperialism
It can also imply a few others, depending on who exactly you're talking to.

Fascism believes in the perfectibility of humanity through technology designed for the best interests of the authority, which most of modernism, and especially futurism, had no qualms and activity pursued. The breaking down of form, the imitation of machines, the use of new mechanically aided and therefore beyond human transcendent depictions would all cohere well with a political system which likewise believed in the utopian potential for a mechanical order to humanity if we could only break it down into the correct building blocks and then repeat them in the right order.

There are of course exceptions of the era, such as the preRaphaelites who wanted to go back to the middle ages with hand woven carpets dyed with surface mined ores, but the overall impact of the technological and perfectible viewpoint at the turn of modernism, its taxonomy and methods, made such political and social components almost necessary to its practice in other media as well.

Incidentally, the preRaphaelites believed in utopian socialism so they weren't opposed to the idea of perfectibility but to the idea it lay with modern technology. William Morris, one of their eminent members, wrote a novel called News from Nowhere about a hand mining return to the good times for humans with peace and equity between the sexes and all that perfect shit without so much machinist machismo, but he only got really rich off mining cyanide for mass produced wallpaper in real life. It was quite obvious which way the winds were turning: eternal progress. Postmodernism is taking those notions of repetition and building blocks to their logical absurdity instead of as a method of perfectibility in part because Hitler, so I guess we have more things to blame him for: he ruined fascism.

An ethno-mythic bundle-of-sticks that orders itself hierarchically.

Fascism was trendy, and a lot of people who didn't know a lot about public policy and stuff got on the bandwagon.
