Is there one single movie that is better than the book?
>>
Fight Club
>>
>>7513806

No Country for Old Men.
>>
Fight Club is universally accepted as a better movie than book.

Cloud Atlas - the book was trying way too hard, I liked the movie better.

Roadside Picnic - Tarkovsky adapted a bad Sci-fi novel into Stalker

Shawshank Redemption and pretty much all Stephen King

2001: space confusion

Most books aren't masterpieces, most books are just movie scripts but worse. Outside of our meme books, most stuff could get adapted into a much better movie (if they haven't already). Honestly, even some books /lit/ kikes to dickride are better as movies. American Psycho is probably the best example of it.
>>
Wristcutters: A Love Story is significantly better than the short story it's based on; Kneller's Happy Campers. I saw the film first and, from watching it, thought there were lots of allusions or bits of story that had been cut short to fit in the film. Turns out, the film has significantly more plot, explores the world far more and is played more subtly with a better ending.
Next to that but not quite the same, the film of Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead was adapted for screen and directed by its original author, Tom Stoppard. Not only is the casting and direction perfect but I think the time between the play being published and it being made into a film gave him time to really polish the writing, specifically the dialogue. The original text feels amateurish by comparison.

Most of Kubrick's adaptations. Not Lolita though.

>AP: The Movie
>better than the book

Ayo, ya dun goof'd. Just because the movie has shown you Patrick "The Bateman" Bateman's ass, doesn't mean that it surpasses the book structure, shopping-ad like prose and sweet San Pellegrino water bottles (glass ones, for enhanced taste and freshness) descriptions. Stay poor, homeless.

t. man who read the book eight times in three different languages
>>
>>7513844
Book is better. It has the Tom Cruise scene and the scene where he stabs a kid at the zoo.
>>
Macbeth, 2001 space odyssey etc, the list goes on

Such a superior piece that it's not even funny.
>>
The Godfather
American Psycho
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
Naked Lunch
To Kill A Mockingbird

I'm struggling to think of others.
>>
>>7514702
Stalker is immensely beautiful and every time I watch it, I feel an urge to rewatch it there and then.
>>
>>7513902
Go the fuck back to /tv/.

Holy shit I seriously want to punch every person that says American Psycho movie is better than the book. The book is INFINITELY better. The movie didn't get the tone, the character or the fucking themes at all.
>>
>>7514758
That guy legit said the book was better though. Calm down.
>>
>>7514758
>he thinks american psycho was good

It's a shit book.

The movie is at least really funny and memeable

Also Stanley Kubrick bodied Stephen king with his rendition of the shining

Blade runner

They're the greatest fantasy films ever made but Tolkien was way comfier, the lore was much deeper and to top it all off the books converted me to Christianity

>Naked Lunch
This one is a bit shaky. Both are fantastic, but different enough to be almost incomparable.

>tfw Cronenberg doesn't have the balls to adapt the Nova trilogy
>>
>>7515717

I don't think it's a matter of balls as much as it is a matter of financing & desire.
>>
>>7515744
Yeah, I know. It's a shame he's stopped doing body horror after eXistenZ, and now does safer stuff. Maybe since he adapted Cosmopolis he'll try an actually good Delillo book, but I can't imagine him ever touching anything as weird as Burroughs again
>>
>>7515695
yea most of the movies suck too

king couldn't write his way out of a soggy cardboard box
>>
>>7516259
>be me
>be Stephen King
>be stuck in a soggy cardboard box
>decide to write myself out of this
>start off with a group of children
>ok time to be more nostalgic about my childhood
>first love, first touches of death
>the children have to make a journey through the unknown land of soggiton
>they bond through various adventures
>ok that's enough childhood nostalgia, time to turn the clocks 20 years forward
>everybody is adult and has realised that they're stuck in a soggy cardboard box
>ok let me construct a love triangle between the main character, some other guy and the only girl in the story
>what's my page count? 700, time to wrap this up in 20 pages
>how can i make this quick i have to go to the supermarket before they close, son's been asking for yugioh cards
>come up with ending
>a UFO appears and the soggy box disappears and everyone's free
>the box was an alien experiment all along to test mankind
>ship to publisher, make another cool million
>movie deal, tv deal
>can afford some good yugioh cards
>successfully written myself out of a soggy cardboard box

Burgess' A Clockwork Orange was much better than Kubrick's film (one of his weaker pictures, though not bad). It's one of the best English post-war novels written.

I preferred Blade Runner over Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is as good a movie as a book, thanks to Johnny Depp becoming Raul and also the voice-over narration on some of those pivotal scenes from the book done verbatim
>>
>>7518604

Came here to say this. The films are far better, but only because they took the books' greatest strengths and elided all the greatest weaknesses (mainly the grinding historian's prose. Dave son of Blave son of Spave son of Zave son of Margave raised his voice and spoke thus).

>>7513806

Lost Horizon (the 1937 version, not the musical abomination).
