Confessions of a Mask was pretty good. So... that, I guess.

Hard Boiled Wonderland
>>
I'm thinking of starting him with Norwegian Wood. Is that alright?
>>
A lot of his work is super samey so I think people tend to like whatever they read early on. Kafka is by far my favorite, Sputnik Sweetheart is good too.
>>
The Sheep Chase one is underrated
>>
>>7504274
You don't seem to know what you are talking about :^)
>>
Hardboiled Wonderland

>>7504342
yes, it's a good starter
just be aware it's his only novel without anything surreal going on
>>

I actually liked After Dark.

First part of the book: 8/10
Middle part of the book: 9/10
Final part of the book: 5/10

I gave the girl I'm madly in love with Norwegian Wood to read. Did I fuck up? Should I kill myself? Will she read it?

You won't like anything else of his. I wish murakami would write another serious novel.
I loved nw, hated wubc.
>>
>>7505114
colorless and his first two novellas didn't have much, if anything surreal in them
>>
Hard Boiled Wonderland because it inspired a pretty good anime.

Wind-up Bird Chronicle. Plenty of interesting content, well written (which is surprising), and nice and long. He doesn't even talk much about his old faithfuls, like pasta and classical music.

It's a really good book.

Serial Experiments Lain was the one good anime specifically because it made you aware of the pandering garbage of all other anime.

South of the Border was nice

Only have read Norwegian Wood, but I plan to get to Wind Up Bird eventually. I actually thoroughly enjoyed NW, even if it was, really, just a notch above John Green-tier shit.
>>
>>7505217
Exactly how I felt about the book. It was beautifully engrossing for the first two thirds and then just ended abruptly. The atmosphere created left an impression enough for me to seek out more of his works.

Uh, yes he does.

How long is Kafka on the Shore supposed to be? One site says 400~ pages, another 600, and the one I have on my Kindle is apparently 700 pages.

it was pretty good. I love writing about writing, especially in a way that's not mystical and overly reverent.
>>
>>7506200
what animu?

I enjoyed it because I like Murakami and I like running.

Only I've read by him. I very much enjoyed it. Every night the couple of days prior to my first half marathon. Then in the mornings, I would go on a distance run with the romanticized notions of endurance and self discipline on my mind. I won't read anything else by him because although I enjoyed it, it was only because the topic was of interest and not that he was a particularly captivating writer. He was very honest and sincere in a way that few writers manage without being boring, but not notably elegant or captivating.
