Personally I prefer Macbeth over the other tragedies. My rankings takes into account social impact, OP didn't have Great Expectations, Romeo and Juliet, Moby Dick, The Old Man and the Sea, etc it just seems like he picked random second tier books from famous authors.

As an aside both Hemingway and Kafka were better in short bursts, here is a nice contrast:

Think about what you're saying.

The Fault in Our Stars is as valid and high quality as Hemingway, Dostoyevsky and Shakespeare?

Quality matters. Art doesn't exist for art's sake; it is created in a historical context, not a vaccuum. Ideas are projected through art as a medium. Correct ideas presented in an aesthetically pleasing way is good art. Incorrect (or nonexistent) ideas presented in an incorrect way (illegible or undecernable), is bad art.
>>
>>7506517
>The Fault in Our Stars is as valid and high quality as Hemingway, Dostoyevsky and Shakespeare?
valid? I don't know. Probably not.
But are there people who would enjoy John Green more? Definitely.
Is there anything wrong with that? No.

>>
>>7506517
The more contraversial/different book is, the more difficult it is to judge it's quality.
While I agree it's certainly sometimes possible to distinguish a bad book from a good one, standards in art aren't objective, they change from person to person, from purpose to purpose, from time to time etc.
Literature isn't black and white. It isn't either "good" or "bad". It's about the effect it gives to the mass of readers, thus it's the readers after all who judge the book, and they determine wether it's good or bad.
So, if every human being was a retard, a shitty book would be considered a high quality one - it all derives from a reader, not from a book, man.

Take for a moment to think about exactly who would be enjoying it more, though. Someone either under-read or young, someone who finds it much more easy to access than Dostoyevsky, Shakespeare, etc. It is the ignorance of these people that makes them "enjoy it more", a quality separate from the text.

The problem isn't the ignorance itself, but the notion that somehow an uninformed opinion holds the same weight as an informed one.
