Oh boy. Did you find it in sort of a weird place in the store, and did it look like it had been sort of forcibly wedged into the shelves?
>>
let's talk about bronies

do you think they all hate being bronies?

when your worldview is that limited, is it an act of rebellion to become a brony?

any /lit/ bronies like to take the stand?

Yeah, I have to admit it's pretty good. I was ready to hate it until I actually read it, and was pleasantly surprised. It's well-written for sure. I may pick it up now.

She has written other books, this was published under a different name.
This is her goodreads page.

I may or may not be a brony. I do frequent /mlp/ and I do watch the show on occasion. I've also written several MLP fanfics.

I've never bought any of the toys or merch, though. I'm mostly just in it for the storytelling and the characters.

As an MLP fan who isn't a brony, tell me; what is the appeal of the show?

I saw the first three episodes, seemed to me like a regular children's cartoon.

Honestly? In the beginning it was the sincerity, I think. Lauren Faust created this show, these characters, this world that was all designed above all else to sell toys, but somehow in the earlier seasons it comes off as not cynical or marketed. I mean, I'm sure it was to a large extent, but it masks the marketing well. It deals with very fundamental, earnest concepts like friendship, loyalty, honesty, kindness, and so on, and does them without putting them down.

Going hand-in-hand with this sincerity was a very kid-friendly, but still very interesting setting. It was essentially a mashup of Middle-Earth with the D&D Monster Manual, with standard My Little Pony magical conceits draped over it. Somehow it all worked. All the cities with horse-pun names worked, all the little things you learn about Equestrian culture and civilization work, all the quirks and tweaks of the world fit together, sometimes subtly.

Also, it had some really great character pieces. Some of the main cast get really interesting episodes. Rarity and Rainbow Dash, in particular, are more complex characters than you typically find in a children's cartoon.
