I posted in the other thread, but the books were in height order. Is there a point to having them in name order if I don't own that many books?

The shelf above it is filled with less "literary" books.
>>
>>7482970
oh mah nigga I didnt know
good broad views of his work are "Bounds of Sense" by P F Strawson, "Kant's Transcendental Idealism" by Henry Allison, and the much more simplistic "Kant" by Paul Guyer.for primary sources his most highly rated works are the three critiques, which you can pick up in the sexy and cheap new Hackett editions translated by Pluhar if you're a poor/not-that-obsessed-with-kant-and-looking-for-a-smooth-not-literal-translationfag
if you want to actually study him then def. buy as much of the cambridge editions of his works as you can, particularly "Critique of Pure Reason", "Practical Philosophy (which contains ALL his ethical writings, not just the Critique of Practical Reason but groundwork for the metaphysics of morals and others)", "Critique of the Power of Judgement", "Anthropology, History, and Education" for texts dealing with his general understanding of human nature, and "Theoretical Philosophy After 1781" if you're deadset on ACTUALLY studying the Critique of Pure Reason (a daunting task, many people skirt by it and only read summaries of his work) it contains many works that deal with the COPR by both summarizing/exegesizing or polemicly debating.

their complete works. it's a very large format. 12x18 inches and weighs over 20 lbs. provides analysis of each work and incredibly detailed photography. you can read more on taschen's website about them. they have been reprinted but in smaller formats.

yes they are 'books' in the technical sense... if you mean are they novels or something, no.

it's a catalogue raisonné, biography, analysis all rolled into one. imagine something like pic related for all of his work, sketches, etc. like i said, check it out on taschen's website.

Ah, I see. I'll check out the website, these look interesting.

I saw that they were in cardboard boxes, and to me it seemed as though you described them as if they were just leafs of images and with information, so I thought they weren't actual books bound together.

Yeah man the blanket hate for Penguin gets pretty annoying, especially considering their recent (last ~20 years) efforts at bringing out some great translations. Great intros and solid translations to classics like Don Quixote; literally the only in-print unabridged version of the Count of Monte Cristo; the P&V translation of Anna Karenina, etc. People love to circlejerk, and in their blind hate for Penguin end up being just as stupid as people who blindly love Penguin.

Personally I love them and their prices; it's to Penguin and Oxford that I always first turn when looking for copies of something. My Penguin copy of the Count of Monte Cristo was like 8 fucking bucks for a 1200 page book.
>>
>>7483321
what translation of don quixote do they use?
>>
>>7483321
It's true. They've always existed to be cheap and allow people to read classics when they wouldn't have been able to otherwise. It's exactly what they do and exactly what I use them for. The only other cheap option in the UK is buying Wordsworth classics which are awful in comparison. Oxford are really hard to get here which is a shame because the few that I have are excellent.
>>
>>7483339
John Rutherford. It was my first taste of "real" lit and I didn't appreciate at the time the significance of the translator making an effort to bring back to the text the goofy humor that was apparently lost in most earlier English translations.

>>7483340
You can't get Oxford even online? That sucks, but admittedly there are relatively few books in which I've noticed a significant superiority in Oxford over Penguin.
>>
>>7483350
Not familiar with Rutherford. I've read the Smollett translation, which I really like. It also has humor as well as a feeling of epic adventure about it.

I also read the Putnam translation which is pretty common. It's not bad but I think it's lacking some of the fun as well.

How is the Buss translation of Count of Monte Cristo? (from Penguin)
>>
>>7483350
It's possible online but they tend to be more expensive and 50% of the time they send a different edition to the one specified. Its worth doing sometimes, I did it with all the Zola I've read but for a lot of other books It just too much hassle.
>>
>>7482998
organize by publisher looks 100x better
>>
>>7483369
By publisher?

Should organize the publishers by name, or by something else.
>>
>>7483353
To be fair I haven't read other translations of Quixote, but had enough of a blast reading Rutherford that I ended up having doubts that older translations could hold up to it. I might try Smollett for a re-read, though. Would you think it worthwhile?

Buss for Monte Cristo was absolutely amazing. Like I said above, it's the only in-print edition (of which I'm aware) that's totally unabridged and uncensored, and it's phenomenal. It immediately became my favorite book once I read it, and even though it's been over a year since I read it (actually aiming to re-read this week), I still think about it and get chills sometimes. I've never read the original French, but Buss' translation paints a striking picture of the Count, and does a great job of ranging from dry humor to bone-chilling severity, all with beautiful prose.

Here are a few different examples from some of my favorite passages:

>"But I think you said I have nothing to do. Now, Monsieur, I ask you, do you imagine you have anything to do? Or, to put it more clearly, do you believe that what you do deserves to be called something?"

>"Trees only give us pleasure because they give shade, and shade itself only pleases us because it is full of reveries and visions."

>“Did you experience your father’s death in your absence? Did you see the woman you loved hold out her hand to your rival, while you were croaking in the depths of the abyss?”

Undoubtedly the single greatest adventure story I've ever read. And like I said, the Penguin edition is almost criminally inexpensive; I've given away two copies as gifts already just because they're so good, and so cheap to replace.

>>7483364
Sorry to hear that dude! At least you can enjoy those Wordsworth Classics :^)
>>
>>7483371

>>7483391
How's this?
>>
>>7483380
If you enjoyed Don Quixote enough that you want to read it again in the future, keep Smollett in mind. I don't think it warrants running out and getting it asap though considering you enjoyed Rutherford so much already. Had you disliked it, then maybe I'd say give Smollett a chance sooner.

Nice to hear. I haven't read Monte Cristo in over 10 years now, so I'll keep the Buss in mind. Although I do believe the newest 2008 Oxford edition is complete. The older ones were abridged. They use the older translation, but they re-added the missing text as far as I'm aware.
>>
>>7483400
Still doesn't look right, try organising them by the date the were published, earliest first.
>>
>>7483409
Is there an advantage to organizing them like this?

I can't tell if you're fucking with me or not.
>>
>>7483400

>>7483008

>>
>>7483406
I added Smollett to my amazon wishlist to keep in mind for a re-read, and thanks for the heads up on the new Oxford Monte Cristo; I may check it out just for the introduction if nothing else--although I just checked my copy against the amazon page for the Oxford copy (2008 print), and it looks like Oxford has ~140 fewer pages; I'm not sure how much of that can be imputed to formatting difference.

Hope you enjoy the Buss translation if you end up giving it a shot! Cheers!

The big bulk of vintage on the right is actually just Dickens (my parents bought my his complete works for Christmas one year) and the penguin are mainly in bulk because they're the ones where I have multiple books from the same author. There is very little organisation other than that. It's a none permenant place for my books which is probably pretty obvious from how they are stacked.

>>
>>7483896
>How long have you been collecting them for?
depends. Military history phase was when I was in my mid-to-late teens 10–12 years ago. Classic collecting started the same time, as i was reading Tacitus, Livy, Suetonius, Thucydides etc. back then.

Printing and typography books last 7 years or so.

/lit/ sort of literature last 4–5 years.

I probably acquire ~100 or so books a year, but only read 40–60 a year. As some of those read are borrowed from the library I obtain at least twice as much as I read in a year, just because I might want to read it at some point, so I get it while it's cheap

Have you studied philosophy because I can't imagine anyone reading Kant for fun. Seriously, COPR is such a long and impenetrable book. It's also so dense and old fashioned that you'd have to read it a few times to understand what he's even saying. Then, on top of all that, it's not like his stuff is even that relevant to today's philosophy. He's a hugely important figure in the history of philosophy so knowing his stuff will help you understand what a lot of newer stuff is based on but is it really worth all that pain and effort for a bit of historical context?!

I'm not having a go I just find it hard to believe that people read this kind of stuff for any other reason than 1. they have to for a degree in it or 2. so they can sound clever. If you genuinely enjoy reading proper academic stuff like Guyer, Strawson and the original Kant then massive respect to you

Its quite good. The Abolition of Britain is really his best. Broken Compass details how the conservative party failed to offer opposition to the left wing policies of Labour in the latter part of the twentieth century and early 21st century. But I feel that Hitchens has a very limited view of conservatism. He's always entertaining and provocative to read though.

You caught me. I was into genre fiction as a kid (I actually collected different editions of the Hobbit)

Good stuff. I strongly recommend adding Schmitt (Political Theology, The Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy, and The Concept of the Political) and Finnis (Natural Law and Natural Rights) to your conservative /lit/ pile. Nice collection so far tho :D

Where is your copy of Babbitt? I found a 1950s copy in a used book store early this year. So surprised to find it. The smell of an old book is awesome... Way better than new
