Read the Kybalion if you haven't. It's probably the best starting point for Occult literature. Regarding this genre, it is specifically designed by the writers to have a hierarchy of initiation. One work by Crowley will seem unintelligible until you have his disciple Regardie expound the subject material and vice versa.
After the Kybalion, do some light research upon the many paths and traditions of magic and pick one that interests you and stick with it for a while.

You're right to a certain extent. The purpose of the rituals are mainly to obtain a state of mind that is foreign to everyday life. It is not so much a practice as to develop yourself personally, but to kill your ego. Only through continued practice will you start to feel what is known as "godhead" or "ego death".
Alesiter Crowley for instance states that the sole purpose and the goal of every magician is to achieve communion with their respective "Holy guardian angel".
Some interpret this to be a form of higher self, but if you have read any of his works, it goes beyond what we consider to be a "conscience" and is completely foreign from the intellect. It is said that all great revelations come from this source and all initiatory work is simply a means to attain this communication.
From a practical standpoint, one could argue that these magical capabilities that are trained from repeated ritual and meditation are latent capabilities that we possess as humans, but really all we can do is speculate about the experience of others.
That is why the Great Work is yours alone. Follow the practices (I know this is /lit/ but you can't expect results by reading alone) and use experience to dictate whether or not there is validity in God.

Yeah, they are pretty elitist now. But there are a bunch of leaks all around different torrent sites. I downloaded about 60 GB of stuff from PirateBay alone.
