Was he an edgelord?
>>
Yes, but he was also a brilliant mind and a talented writer
>>
Yes, but he did something noteworthy with it, unlike most people.

Read The Great Shark Hunt asap, a true goldmine.

This. Nigga will be remembered forever.

Not really, unless you think doing drugs is le edgy. He fucked himself over with the Raoul Duke persona but he was pretty good in the 60s and 70s.
>>
>>7481283
and he also knew he was being an edgelord after awhile when it got in the way of his work
>>
If you don't have any edgelord tendencies you don't belong on 4chan

No. Being edgy is largely about wanting to be something, but poorly attempting or completely lacking the diligence to become that thing - often only dressing up or posing as that thing. Like someone who claims to be a reincarnation of Satan, but the only thing Satan-like about them is a shit ton of controversial piercings and tattoos. Sure they can pose, but what they actually do (including pursuing that character in a cosmetic way), is pretty opposite to what the supposed character would actually do.
Ie, edgelord Hunter would wear a mask, but it turns out this guy really was a mix of extreme conviction and extreme drug usage.

You mean drive around the desert eating mescaline?

A 1993 memoir of Hunter S. Thompson describes his daily routine as:

"3:00 p.m. rise

3:05 Chivas Regal with the morning papers, Dunhills

3:45 cocaine

3:50 another glass of Chivas, Dunhill

4:05 first cup of coffee, Dunhill

4:15 cocaine

4:16 orange juice, Dunhill

4:30 cocaine

4:54 cocaine

5:05 cocaine

5:11 coffee, Dunhills

5:30 more ice in the Chivas

5:45 cocaine, etc., etc.

6:00 grass to take the edge off the day

7:05 Woody Creek Tavern for lunch-Heineken, two margaritas, coleslaw, a taco salad, a double order of fried onion rings, carrot cake, ice cream, a bean fritter, Dunhills, another Heineken, cocaine, and for the ride home, a snow cone (a glass of shredded ice over which is poured three or four jiggers of Chivas.)

9:00 starts snorting cocaine seriously

10:00 drops acid

11:00 Chartreuse, cocaine, grass

11:30 cocaine, etc, etc.

12:00 midnight, Hunter S. Thompson is ready to write

12:05-6:00 a.m. Chartreuse, cocaine, grass, Chivas, coffee, Heineken, clove cigarettes, grapefruit, Dunhills, orange juice, gin, continuous pornographic movies.

6:00 the hot tub-champagne, Dove Bars, fettuccine Alfredo

8:00 Halcyon

8:20 sleep"

How did he have time for anything? Anyone else write on drugs like he must have?
>>

I think this is satirical. It's the kind of joke Hunter would have made.
>>
>>7481260
He was a talented writer that bought into his book persona. Lost his talent very early on, only two good books are Hell's Angels and Fear and Loathing.

It's hilarious watching him flounder, like on that Vegas trip with his bong illustrator filmed for BBC.
>>

>taking coke on acid

I certainly hope so. That's just fucked up.
>>
is there a guide for his work?

would like to read it but not just fear and loathing in lv

where should i start ?
>>
>>7481752
The Great Shark Hunt is a great overview of his work until the early 80s, and, to be perfectly honest, there's not much point in reading anything he wrote after that point, except maybe his Nixon obituary and 9/11 comments.

My mistake, it came out in 1979, so not really 80s.
