I'm vers so it's nbd either way

If there's an English translation of the tell-all Jiro Fukushima wrote about his relationship with Mishima tho then you might be able to find out

>yfw Mishima was considering marrying now-Empress Michiko back when she was just a commoner
>>
>>7479237
so you're saying mishima is the japanese equivalent of a sperg school shooter? how are you disagreeing
>>
>>7479272
He tried to overthrow the Japanese government in an attempt to return to an imagined authentic Japanese state (pre-Western intervention) that could only be kicked off with the return to power of the emperor. He killed no one but himself once he realized that wasn't going to happen. You're gonna have to think a bit harder to come up with the U.S. equivalent of all that.
>>
>>7479205
why is that wrong if he structures his life around the ritualistic following of the cowboy ideology?
why is that wrong if he tries a coup d'etat as a pretext to kill himself in the traditional fashion of cowboys?
mishima was deluded but he was in it 100%, body and soul. and he seemed to have a good mind.
he was so strong that his aide couldn't even decapitate him properly and killed himself in shame.

Yeah, Patriotism is a great start, one of the most stunning short stories I've had the pleasure of reading.

The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea is a good followup

>loving your country's culture.
come on
>>
>>7480209
It's easy to say such a thing as a westerner. Our nations no longer have any culture, but to man whose country was in the midst of that process, you can't really blame him. All that had given life meaning was being degraded or crushed.
>>
>>7479313
>dumb yank scared of anything authentic
it's mishima who distanced himself from reality.

>make sure you keep that ironic distance between you and the world, lest someone think you have real convictions

mishima was a Japanese Don Quixote with a peter pan complex. replace don Quixote's sense of chivalry with muh emperor and teenage mix ups of violence and beauty and there you go.

>>7479197
he loved his idealistic notions of it more than your average Japanese person. he didn't realize he was doing that, that's why he was ridiculed by the gathered soldiers before killing himself.
>>
>>7480218
he was a madman who would sacrifice sanity for idealized notions of "culture" or even his ideas of art. he thought art was more important than a man's life since art could last longer. that's deranged and juvenile as fuck.
>>
>>7480661
>he thought art was more important than a man's life
do you not believe this?
>>
>>7480661
Children value Art over life?
>>
>>7480661
>that's deranged

"'Formerly, all the world was mad,' say the most refined, and they blink...
One has one's little pleasure for the day and one's little pleasure for the night: but one has a regard for health.
'We have invented happiness,' say the last men, and they blink.'"

"The earth has become small, and on it hops the last man, who makes everything small. His race is as ineradicable as the flea; the last man lives longest."
>>
>>7480663
life in all its imperfections is the greatest art.

I would destroy the most valuable pieces of art to save someone who valued their own life and the lives of others. I would do it every time without hesitation.

when you're a teen you get really romantic about a lot of things. I consider myself a creative person. I write music and fiction. I treasure the connections that people make way more. it's organic and alive. art lives too through inspiration but you can't compare it to the impact a person can have on another person.

no. it's terribly cheesy...I won't argue that. but it's perfectly reasonable.

Do you even know what culture is? where do you thnk culture is found? Is culture a mere euphanism for what you find in a museum or somthing that only "older" and more "primitive" societies have?

Get your shit together

>the intentional fallacy
His motif of performance and ritual was much more likely an expression of his gay identity in a Japan that rejected homoeroticism out of an internalization of Western values in an attempt to seem modern to their Western allies.
>>
>>7482947
I've thought about this a lot.
I feel like the kind of culture he's talking about is the sum total of the particular pointless things that an isolated society organically grows over time.
>>
>>7484440
lol
>>
>>7483811
I imagine one of many reasons he wanted to die young was to be immortalized in a more youthful image. He was weary of old age. People but into his bullshit "artistic excuses" but the reality is he was immature was a flashy/hammy kind of guy.
