How can the expansion of the universe slow and accelerate? I thought it was expanding at the speed of light?

Dark matter they say

British Gothic era fiction, around the early 19th century.
Great advancements in science had just been made in the Enlightenment. As a reaction to this, quite often the field of science (or scientists) became represented in the antagonists in gothic fiction.

"Art is the Tree of Life. Science is the Tree of Death" (William Blake)

I think pic related illustrates the sentiment rather well.

lol cosmology and physics and astronomy are such meme fields.

>knows jackshit about a certain field of knowledge
>something about it doesn't fit his narrow frame of mind
>must be a meme, amirite? xD

You are the meme

The universe is expanding much faster than the speed of light. That's only a local rule, empty space doesn't abide to it and can expand as fast as it "wants".

>That's only a local rule
Assuming you're referring to the speed of light being the maximum possible speed, no it's not only a local rule.

local as in confined to our physical space and not the theoretical space which existed outside the big bang, you pleb.

I like the way the scientist is breaking the fourth wall and staring straight at the viewer, as if he respects no convention or boundary no matter how subtle or polite it might be.

that's a pretty cool thought

>OP asks for book recommendations
>everyone just tries to discuss astronomy in a retardesque manner
>basically validating the /sci/-meme

we dont know how fast the universe is expanding

2bh it makes more sense that the universe is expanding slower than the speed of light, but both have issues.

faster than the speed of light makes sense with what we've estimated the mass of the universe, but that means the universe is open with no clear end and that would mean that the start would seem to be uncaused

slower than the speed of light would make the universe closed and contained, and would explain the start of the universe (it never started its been in a perpetual cycle), but then we're missing something like 9/10ths of the mass of the universe

This is exactly what scientific positivists think of themselves. Jesus.

Dark energy increases as the volume of the universe does, and the inertia of the original Big Bang runs out.

Blindsight and Echopraxia by Watts. IMO it does what Lovecraft tried to do and except for one story failed to do.

Yeah we do, it's called Hubble's Law. Hubble estimates the rate of expansion to be 72km/Mpc/s
