I want to learn about literature itself, what defines literature, what literature excludes, and so on.
Is pic related a good place to start my journey?

Start with Aristotle's Poetics and Rhetoric
>>7468131
Will do! Will any translation do?
>>7468131
aristotle was a hack and the poetics is the worst thing to happen to western civilization

read "Lectures on Literature Vladimir Nabokov" also his lectures on Russian literature. both books are great.
If the author self-identifies as a "feminist" or "theorist" or "genderqueer" or "deconstructionalist" or "lacanian" or "marxist" just avoid them entirely.

>start with the greeks
nice

I read this and a book by Steven Lynn called Texts & Contexts. If you're really visual and need examples of criticism schools, I would use Lynn, this is more dry but still good for serious introduction into lit theory

I've seen the Lynn before. Now I know why. :) Will definitely check it out. Thank you.

>It has been highly influential throughout Western history.
did you have a point or an objection or did you just drop by to point obvious shit?
>>7468169
What should I object to when you don't have an argument?
>>7468177
>doesn't know you can object to assertions
>modern /lit/
so you just wanted to drop by to point out obvious shit then, that's cool.
