It doesn't really judge your accent though, it just bases it off of the various regional slang you use. The two aren't always correlated.

The West has probably the most neutral accent (Gen Am is passe due to the spread of cot-caught merger), so it would make sense for an ESL speaker.

I suspect it has something to do with the combination of fashion sense and school practice. How frequent in Chicago and Cincinnati is it to wear shoes other than sneakers for non-athletic activities, and do those school systems mandate footwear for gym class?

The frequency of sneakers as the default footwear around the US is shockingly high.

That wouldn't make sense for my area. Tennis is really not that big in the Arklatex region.

But I don't think many people even consider "tennis" when saying "tennis shoes", since everyone here say "tenny shoes."

I once asked my mom why they were called "tenny shoes" once and she told me it's probably because they cost $10.

>>
>people confusing accent with dialect
What a bunch of fucking morons this thread is filled with. I guess it should be expected from a facebook/reddit thread
>>
>>7455745
Eh my school in the south required proper athletic shoes so we didn't screw up the gym floor. We didn't call them "gym shoes" here though. Tennis shoes, not exactly the same as sneakers, was the popular phrase when I was young, sneakers became the default when Nike gained popularity.
>>
>>7455812
Oh. I rarely here sneaker here. Cincinnati does have a few unique words and pronunciations so I guess it isn't surprising we are the only ones that say gm shoes. We also differentiate every type of shoe with "X shoe" like dress shoes, gym shoes, basketball shoes, running shoes, work shoes, etc. Maybe its from that.
