So how does your accent fit into the prescribed US accents?
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/12/20/sunday-review/dialect-quiz-map.html
Pic related is mine, I'm from urban Australia
accurate
What does this mean? Im not even a native speaker.
I grew up in the states, but I didn't grow up in any of these places. I lived six years in Sacramento. Me and my brother both have weird, affected accents.
When I do the test only Michigan is red and that is where I am from and still live
It doesn't really judge your accent though, it just bases it off of the various regional slang you use. The two aren't always correlated.
Southeast US all the way.
>>7453788
Basically nailed it, though idk where the Baltimore thing came from.
Canadian here
I don't want to have a filthy Bawston accent though. I'd rather be a Nu Yawkar.
>>7453973
and who actually says light bugs.
>all these murican concepts that I have no term for
Wasn't expecting so many
not a native speaker / europe.
>>7453910

Rural Ontario
European and I speak with a British accent.
>>7454049
What I got for the British test. A shame because I much prefer the sound of Northern accents but that's how I was taught.
>>7453815
The West has probably the most neutral accent (Gen Am is passe due to the spread of cot-caught merger), so it would make sense for an ESL speaker.
>>7454059
Having a Southern English accent just means you pronounce words properly.
Makes sense since I'm from California.
What the fuck? Why is it just us and southeastern Ohioans who say "gym shoes"?
Mine's fairly exact, though I'm more east than DFW area. More into the piney woods, but definitely still Texas.
>>7453982
I use lightning bug and firefly interchangeably.
>>7453982
We say it in Texas. And pill bugs for the gray rolling ones.
Though I'll admit it's more like "peel bugs" and "lightin bugs".
>>7454099
yeah, well I use your mom and my 10 incher interchangeably.
>>7454049
>Jarseyy
>Nuwark
jelly.
what's a good Posh Brit accent to imitate?
>>7454103
In Ky we call what you call pill bugs Rollie pollies if I'm thinkin of what yr thinkin
makes sense, I'm from NoVa
>>7454049
Fellow yuropean with similar results
>>7454090
I suspect it has something to do with the combination of fashion sense and school practice. How frequent in Chicago and Cincinnati is it to wear shoes other than sneakers for non-athletic activities, and do those school systems mandate footwear for gym class?
The frequency of sneakers as the default footwear around the US is shockingly high.
>>7453788
"How would you address a group of two or more people?"
kek mine isn't even on there
I say "yeh"
also,
>What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
>the wolf is giving birth
>the devil is beating his wife
>pineapple rain
>monkey's wedding
uh
anyways overall only a bit off, too south in its guess
>>7454161
I've always heard it called "the devil beating his wife".
Say what you will but I fucking love southern expressions.
>>7454159
When I was a kid, I wore gym shoes all the time; most kids did. They did mandate that particular kind of footwear for gym though
Huh. Always wanted to check out Maine.
>>7454163
I went to a summer camp that was split between Wisconsinites and Illinoisans. We got into arguments about that a lot
>>7454173
I am from Europe btw
/lit/ - LITERATURE
>>7454188
Language is a crucial and under-appreciated aspect of all literature
>>7454197
Then talk about language.
This is a /soc/ thread about what accent everyone has. No one here is talking about language relating to literature.
>>7454159
That wouldn't make sense for my area. Tennis is really not that big in the Arklatex region.
But I don't think many people even consider "tennis" when saying "tennis shoes", since everyone here say "tenny shoes."
I once asked my mom why they were called "tenny shoes" once and she told me it's probably because they cost $10.

I'm not from the US, i'm Swedish.
I'm French. I mostly learned English through several lengthy stays in Ireland.
>>7453883
this the moment I saw Panther as an answer for Big Wild Cat, Florida fag here, I knew it was looking for regional slang
>>7454282
Victim of popular culture.
I'm from the east coast of Canada so it kind of makes sense.
>>7454386
I'm also retarded
>>7453788
Southern English master race accent here, no-one gives a fuck how septics speak lmao
>>7454049
>I speak with a British accent.
you think you do kek
>>7453788
I've done this quiz a few times. It's a dead giveaway that we call the strip of grass between roads "neutral ground" because that is literally what divided the Spanish and French residents of New Orleans. Pronounced like "neutra" though.
>>7454090
>>7454159
I am from Cincinnati.I think it is from schools. We have a lot of catholic schools and I went to one. We are required to have separate pair of shoes for gym class because you are suppose to wear nicer shoes during regular classes.
>people confusing accent with dialect
What a bunch of fucking morons this thread is filled with. I guess it should be expected from a facebook/reddit thread
>>7455745
Eh my school in the south required proper athletic shoes so we didn't screw up the gym floor. We didn't call them "gym shoes" here though. Tennis shoes, not exactly the same as sneakers, was the popular phrase when I was young, sneakers became the default when Nike gained popularity.
>>7455812
Oh. I rarely here sneaker here. Cincinnati does have a few unique words and pronunciations so I guess it isn't surprising we are the only ones that say gm shoes. We also differentiate every type of shoe with "X shoe" like dress shoes, gym shoes, basketball shoes, running shoes, work shoes, etc. Maybe its from that.
I'm a Kiwi
I got Atlanta and Provedance Rhode Island
>literally nobody outside of new england uses the word rotary
>>7455858
I'm NZ as well, but I got New York, Pembroke Pines and Miami / Hialeah, and somehow 'sneakers' was the distinctive word.
>drive-through liquor stores
wtf America?
>>7456819
why wouldnt you?
>tfw lived in AZ for much of childhood
>tfw spent ages 10-20 in NC
>tfw southwestern 'dialect' with southeastern twang
It new I was from Denver. Spooky
From Norway, have never been outside Europe and rarely speak English.
>>7456819
I remember there was this one bar that had a drive through that would sell actual drinks to drivers. They'd put like a coffee lid on it and say that it's only intended to drink this when you're not driving and then give you a wink.
From Joburg, South Africa.
>>7454315
lol!
>>7458039
That's actually really cool because your dialect lines up to the part of the US where your countrymen and other Scandinavians settled
From Wisconsin, pretty accurate.
>French
I got pretty much this >>7453929
>>7453844
So am I. I don't think we have a distinctive accent though.
>>7456819
Louisiana here. We have a pile of daiquiri shops. It's like the after dinner dessert of sad middle aged people here.
>>7454155
I got a similar graphic, lived in Fairfax my whole life. Out of curiosity, how do you pronounce caramel?
>>7456819
If you're wondering what the CORRECT term for them is, they're called brew thrus.
pretty damn accurate as far as slang goes.
There's a word for lawn between sidewalk and street?
>>7456819
I answered I didn't know what those were, and it immediately knew where I was from o.o
I didn't know the rest of the US was up to that, though.
>>7454059
I got this, too. I'm from Hollywood though haha
Rural Michigan
>>7459595
Yes, curb
>>7459741
The curb is the concrete lip on the edge of the road.
>>7453788
I don't get this
(I'm from the UK)
>>7453788
My accent is that of Tidewater Virginia. Linguists have recognized it as the most understandable and correct American accent, and telemarketing companies search for us as potential employees because of it.
>>7453788
Pretty damn spot on. I grew up in Newark, which is the city that is surrounded by Fremont.
I'm from Iceland.
>>7460374
This is my map
As you can see, Michigan doesn't matter
