people that actually read good shit are rare af in the real world unfortunately. the only one of my friends that actually reads anything at all is the gf, and she mostly reads pleb-tier read-for-the-plot historical fiction and other chick lit. once in a while she'll read something actually literary but she won't like it, she'll say it's too "pretentious" or smth. for example she said that about william styron and delillo ffs

Nah dude he's just bitter. There are good people out there who read books. My advice to you is to not even consider it when you are first meeting people. A lot of true patricians hide their power level in order to not ostracize themselves. It's a sad state of society, but it's the world we live in.
Also, learn to discuss things other than books, such as music or sports, then relate such topics to literature when appropriate. Others, even those who don't regularly read, will often surprise you with their insight. This is also a great way to get someone to slip-up on the facade and reveal their actual lit-ness. Same is true for jokes that involve obscure references. Just don't over do it.

For example most of my friends are primarily interested in sports and video games, but they're also genuinely funny, intelligent, and educated people, so meeting up with them is always a good time. We regularly make each other laugh and have interesting conversations, often at the same time.

You are lucky anon, I never had a college experience with meaningful frienships, every one was caught up in games and my work environment sucks. Having people to converse and even debate shit over a beer or boardgames would probably make my life complete.

1. Go to your local indie bookstore, talk to a bookseller, let him know what you're reading, what you've been enjoying, and ask for recommendations.
2. Buy and read his / her recommendations.
3. Return to the store with a few interesting points about those books, or a few questions about things that seemed vague and interesting. Engage in conversation. Thank bookseller.
4. Once you get a sense of what the bookseller likes, find that spot where your tastes overlap. Recommend books you think he might like.
5. Repeat until on friendly terms. (Shouldn't take too long.)
6. Offer to volunteer at bookstore. Restocking shelves, helping w/ returns, whatever.
7. Through volunteering / hanging out at bookstore, you'll eventually meet other people who love literature. These will be your new lit friends.
Bookstores serve as the nexus of local literary communities. You meet a ton of interesting folk. I'm surprised more young people interested in lit don't do this more often.
