/lit/, seriously, how do I find literary friends? It's hard as fuck.
>>
Why would you want friends?
Kill yourself op
>>
it's not worth it

sifting through the obnoxious, and the /lit/-style autists will drive you crazy.

if you must, try poetry readings or open mics that cater mostly to writers/poets

>>

This. I am an assburger so I don't seek friendships anyway, and I really wouldn't want to make friends with another one of me.
>>
>>7449812
Alas, I fear you're right, because I've certainly come across semi-/lit/ people and it's very hard to find one's that aren't insufferably pretentious, on the one hand, and autistic on the other.
>>
>>7449815
How do I meet grad school people without going to grad school.
>>
>>7449842
Just walk into the class and act like you've always been there
>>
>>7449842
Any common hang-outs or areas around the university. Also, literature conferences.

You can spy on what grad students there are on most department webpages and try to find one with good taste. Email them with questions maybe.
>>
Go to book events.

Duh.
>>
people that actually read good shit are rare af in the real world unfortunately. the only one of my friends that actually reads anything at all is the gf, and she mostly reads pleb-tier read-for-the-plot historical fiction and other chick lit. once in a while she'll read something actually literary but she won't like it, she'll say it's too "pretentious" or smth. for example she said that about william styron and delillo ffs

so in short, gl finding "literary friends". reading is an activity you do by yourself anyway so it doesn't really matter. read discussion online, obviously /lit/ is shitpost central but there's occasionally something worthwhile posted here. also there are some intelligent goodreads users if you look hard enough.

you got books. you don't need friends.
>>
>>7449826
Nah dude he's just bitter. There are good people out there who read books. My advice to you is to not even consider it when you are first meeting people. A lot of true patricians hide their power level in order to not ostracize themselves. It's a sad state of society, but it's the world we live in.

Also, learn to discuss things other than books, such as music or sports, then relate such topics to literature when appropriate. Others, even those who don't regularly read, will often surprise you with their insight. This is also a great way to get someone to slip-up on the facade and reveal their actual lit-ness. Same is true for jokes that involve obscure references. Just don't over do it.

I met a couple of girls that said they were into literature once. Turns out they wrote gay Harry Potter/Doctor Who fanfiction, respectively.

I don't talk about literature any more outside of /lit/. Conveniently, that also ensures that my pursuits aren't tainted by vanity.

Seconded, friends are overrated as fuck. I purged friends from my life once I grew sick with how much of my life I was just promising away to other people, or that they felt entitled to. Even if it is different people in different days, it all adds up to so little time for your self.

Maybe I am disturbed or overly cynical, but I now actually prefer the life of a quasi-hermit.

You're probably never going to find yourself a clique of literature aficionados, but that doesn't mean you can't have fulfilling friendships. For example most of my friends are primarily interested in sports and video games, but they're also genuinely funny, intelligent, and educated people, so meeting up with them is always a good time. We regularly make each other laugh and have interesting conversations, often at the same time.

I find girls like this particularly alluring. I don't even know why. This specimen in particular, seems like the 'lol so randum xd' types, but I'm all for that. Girls like this pull you far beyond the ether of lust; deeper, into a kind of sublime will to claim her as your property, so to speak. Not in any chauvinistic sense, more in a jealous way. In the same way that you wouldn't want anyone else touching your precious jewel, or your newly born baby. You just want to keep it safe, and hugging it constantly, and providing warmth to the innocent thing.

why would want friends, have actually ever listened to people. People just want you to listen to them. They don't want hear anything about you. Try this, its like a game. When listening to someone don't say anything and see how long before they notice you haven't said a thing. You'll notice it will take a very long time or they won't notice at all.

1. Go to your local indie bookstore, talk to a bookseller, let him know what you're reading, what you've been enjoying, and ask for recommendations.

2. Buy and read his / her recommendations.

3. Return to the store with a few interesting points about those books, or a few questions about things that seemed vague and interesting. Engage in conversation. Thank bookseller.

4. Once you get a sense of what the bookseller likes, find that spot where your tastes overlap. Recommend books you think he might like.

5. Repeat until on friendly terms. (Shouldn't take too long.)

6. Offer to volunteer at bookstore. Restocking shelves, helping w/ returns, whatever.

7. Through volunteering / hanging out at bookstore, you'll eventually meet other people who love literature. These will be your new lit friends.

Bookstores serve as the nexus of local literary communities. You meet a ton of interesting folk. I'm surprised more young people interested in lit don't do this more often.

Your perspective is wrong.

I've been with my girlfriend for a month now. A week ago, my dad gave me WUBC by Murakami. When I saw my girl, I asked if she wanted me to read it to her. She said yes.

Now we're enjoying literature together. If we like this one, maybe we'll read another Murakami afterwards. Or something different.

It doesn't have to be any more complicated than this.

Someone who identifies as 'literary' must be a douche. I mean no. I just read and enjoy a book now and then. Like I enjoy good food, movies and music. I don't need a title for that.

I'd imagine a many great authors drew their identity from literature and other literary pursuits. There exists a certain connection with literature that extends beyond enjoyment. Enjoyment is a part of it, yes, but literature is much more than that. I don't think Joyce wrote Finnegans Wake to be consumed on the same level as a good steak.
Though I agree defining yourself as literary when you just merely enjoy books is stupid.

Stay away from art sluts. They are dangerous.

Not much more to say here. I hear you.

I was really annoyed by how dull my art history chick friends in school turned out. They all had a thing for ugly clothes and shitty beer.

You're definitely right about them being easy, though.

most sluts in general are borderline personality psychos

you're playing with fire if you date one

This desu. Having friends for its own sake is for adolescents who still need to explore their identity and learn social skills.

After college at latest, the only reason to have friends is to be a part of a community that makes your life work - everything from coworkers to people to get tipsy with after work. Those people aren't really friends in the sense that it's purely extrinsically motivated and transactional; you agree to provide each other with certain emotional services and they agree to do the same.

Keep telling yourself that, buddy. It'll get better.

2bh I don't even completely agree with what I wrote, but that piece of text is reflective of the opinion of basically every adult you'll meet in the western world (well ... the US anyway).

Do you people ever listen to yourselves? Do you even notice how narcissistic you are?
>>

I meant that in the sense that you can both have a navel gazing quibble with the way the world works and still accept how it does in fact work.

Were it the case that adults had friends out of innocent, intrinsic motivation like they (arguable and some of the time) did in adolescence or childhood, we'd prolly be better off. But that isn't how adulthood seems to work.

Dude I'm just describing the average lives and opinions of every adult I've ever met (with the exception of some immigrants I've known from third world countries where social norms are different).

Nigga do I have to start pulling quotes from Bowling Alone or something to demonstrate this shit? If you don't believe me then just look up some studies on this; American adults mostly don't have very many friends and most social bonds are through work.
