Fuck. I can't justify spending this much on these books.
What is /lit/'s opinion on used books? That or begging for gift cards may be my own choice.

/lit/ loves used books. The more worn and dog-eared the better. We don't really read and used books make it look like we do for the bookshelf threads.
I love used books because it allows me to more freely purchase books than I would have before. For example in op shops I just buy every single penguin/vintage/oxford paperback they have and is usually an interesting experience. Used books are usually 60-90% off so I can't really justify buying new books any more. If you live in the US it becomes even better due to abebooks.
I buy exclusively used books.

i've filled out a fairly respectable bookshelf on used books. it stimulates the bookshops that sell them, but in terms of supporting the creators, you'd be better off paying for the brand new. it's a tough lot, wanting to enjoy a work, and to support the OP, so to speak.
I also only buy used books, and I only buy books that I can't find in the library. When I've finished reading them, I usually donate them or give them to a friend, keeping only three or four of my absolute favorites with me. I move often and travel for a living, and unfortunately I don't have much space in my luggage.
I buy a lot of used books but only in good condition. I get grossed out if they are too dirty and battered, and marginalia drives me crazy.
