Adorno called the cops because his students were being too loud near him. Apparently his health rapidly deteriorated around this time.

He was literally "no fun allowed" in both personal life and philosophical. It's impossible to have fun and not be complicit in some way. All art must remind us of the Holocaust etc

He was just too much. Interesting critique of Hegel though.

This is true tho.

I haven't looked into it, but I think they were disturbing his courses (dancing on his desk, throwing stuff around and making noise) because they considered that he had surrendered and became a part of the system. I believe he wrote On Resignation during that time, perhaps after the incident. This doesn't excuse his reaction, but perhaps he felt that his life was threatened.

That depends. Maybe his "there is no poetry after Auschwitz" bit was a bit much, but then again did lose friends there. But his earlier stuff, although dubious in some areas (such as his initial take on jazz), had the right idea imo: entertainment takes up the free time that was normally dedicated to art and culture (scol, as in the root for school and scholar, initially meant leasure or communication made during free time). Even though entertainment, insofar as it is of some quality and avoiding the high-low culture distinction, integrates to some extent the modern idea of improvement, there is nonetheless quite a drastic change that occured in our time between intellectual and specialist.

If they were disturbing the education that other students have paid thousands of dollars for it absolutely does excuse his reaction.

How do you into Schopenhauer?
>>
>>7418891
Have a solid understanding of Kant, and then read Schopenhauer's books. Being familiar with Plato and the Upanishads also helps.

Plato is also incredibly fun to read surprisingly. Particularly the Symposium and the Last Days of Socrates.
