Much like Hemingway and Alan Moore, Whitman himself is great but everyone who came after him and tried to imitate him is fucking awful.

Someone explain to me why Donkey Hote is so revered? So far it's just "adventures of crazy man". Some of the wit and ridicule made me smile, barely, but most of it fell flat.

It seems like it would be funnier in the time it was written. Humor has changed.

I hate Donkey Joke as well. Also Shakesbeer.
>>
>>7415164
It honestly is trash. Gaddis is a hack.
>>
>>7415158

The first part sucks, the humour at the start is low brow, and the digresive tales are boring. Everyone knows that. The genius in the book is seeing these characters interact with each other (and the author with the book itself) and grow over the course of the book. When you read the second part, you'll understand.

Gaddisfags are seriously the most delusional, autistic people on this board.

>>
>>7415178
Is Gaddis written for autists? Does that mean I should read him?
>>
>>7415179
>Gass
>better than Gaddis
I completely agree, friend.
>>
>>7415188
No, autists only circlejerk him because he is relatively unknown outside of this board and a few academic circles, so they think they have great taste by enjoying someone as shite as him.
>>
>>7415196
Gaddis is relatively obscure, sure, but he's not the most unknown. He is undoubtedly, however, one of the greatest authors of last century: no ifs, ands, or cute little butts about that.

I would also like the two of you to explain yourselves because there's no point in making audacious claims without providing at least the abstract of an argument supporting them.

How do you mean?
I have serious problems with the lack of structure and direction in his poems.
They also come across as overly sentimental and more importantly incredibly dry and boring,
attributed mainly to the arbitrary listing off of random farming utensils and manufacturing equipment.
>>
>>7415593
This.

All you basically have to do is read Emerson's essays and you can save yourself all the trouble of reading shitty prose trying to pass off as poetry.

I do not think literature is discussed on 9gag.
Can you address what we are referring to?
His poetry does not read well. Is it not a problem that his poetry does not read well?
>>
>>7416164
Sorry lad, made a bit of an error an in this post. I meant to say that I do not read well, not that his poetry doesn't.
I always get nervous make mistakes like this when my wife goes to detroit for the weekend haha
>>
>>7415593
sentimentality is the only thing that is a sort of valid criticism

the rest just sounds like you didn't get it.

When lilacs last in the dooryard bloom’d,
And the great star early droop’d in the western sky in the night,
I mourn’d, and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.

Ever-returning spring, trinity sure to me you bring,
Lilac blooming perennial and drooping star in the west,
And thought of him I love.

How can anyone with an ounce of brain argue that this would have been better written as prose?

Using a term like "poc" is pretty racist. Apparently all people that aren't white are equally unworthy of actual individual mention. Great Job PC Police.
>>
>>7415593
The structure is actually the prototypical free verse (which I know has been fucked to shit lately), but it was fresh and free at the time (think: taking Milton's blank verse a bit further).

As for the lists, those are mainly to suggest the interconnectedness of all things in the list, and they show the passion Whitman has for the things he was writing about. No one complains about long lists when it's Homer or Vergil or Milton doing it.
