I feel sorry for people reading a translation

Wimmer is a shit-tier translator I'm pretty sure.

I had to stop reading 2666 because it felt so amateurish.

I don't trust Wimmer's command of the Spanish language.

Man, I read that when I was like 15.
I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn't understand it.
It was pretty great, though.
I should re-read it now.

the part about the girl who was into bondage got me into BDSM Thanks, Bolaro

I read a collection of short stories by him recently and thought they were rubbish. Are his novels any better?

What collection? Try Nazi Literatures in the Americas or The Return if you want something a bit more gritty.

My favourite of his books are By Night in Chile and The Insufferable Gaucho. He excels at long short-form, and many of the stories in the collection approach novella-length. I've read all of his published short story collections and this is by far his most cohesive and accomplished collection.

As for By Night, brevity is it's saving grace. It doesn't sag, like TSD or parts of 2666; and, despite being a meandering stream-of-consciousness confession by a dying priest/critic, it manages to stay on track, as opposed to, say, Distant Star or Amulet, his only other novels which approach the same level of construction and themes.

I don't really know if I want more gritty from him. I found the subject matter grating, not because I didn't like the subject matter but I didn't like the way it was handled in the short stories. It seemed like the innovation he was going for was just that he was writing stories about porn stars and prison inmates talking about knives and gangsters, but that he felt no need to try to do anything other than merely depict this new world for literature because he thought that writing about a porn star was wacky enough that he didn't need to.

I don't know if there was more going on under the surface but I couldn't find the mastery of Chekhov or of other short story writers.

Forgot to mention that the collection was called The Return.

How do you interpret the last riddle?

As for the book, it made me rethink some aspects of my life.

What's outside the window is something with the power to destroy the borders/confines of the window. What exactly that is remains undefined, but the knowledge that it's out there is the driving force for Lima and Belano.
