If you want to read something to get INTO reading, then I'd recommend reading whatever is an interesting subject to you.
Personally, I think that Orwell's best essays are a great intro into who captivating non-fiction can be. Shooting and Elephant and "On Politics" are fucking great.

>Shooting an Elephant
This is a solid rec. Just read it around a month ago. Pound-for-pound, I can't think of anything I've enjoyed reading more in a long time.

"The Joy of Sex" was the canonical fucking book when I was a kid. Try that.
Even Cowgirls get the blues - Tom Robbins
>>7408524
Its just an incredibly visceral, real story and one which you can read in literally like 10 minutes or something.
People don't have enough respect for essays and short stories IMO, so if you want stuff to build up curiosity and isnt a big time commitment then try that.

Starting with Greeks aint bad. The nice thing is that there is not really any prerequisite readings for the Iliad, the Odyssey and the plays. If you go straight to realist/modernist/pomo stories you'll find that a lot of them reference or do allegories towards classics.
I wanna read a book about fuckin', give me a suggestion.

I wouldn't recommend 'Infinite Jest' as anything but an experiment in reading, not as a good book as such. It is beautifully written for sure, but like 'Ulysses' it is more of an experiment in what writing can do than it is an actual book you would casually open to get an experience from.

Against the Grain from J.-K. Huysmans.
