always start with the greeks
>>
I don't understand this meme. The greeks were horribly wrong about a lot of things and had fundamental misconceptions about the nature of the world.

That's like telling someone who wants to study chemistry to start with the alchemists.

It's not really the same with philosophy, though I guess a lot of "analytical" philosophy feels like stand-alone works that you don't really need to trace to the source to make sense of.

In my experience that is.
>>
>>7407455
Dunno about that dude, I've been here for 28 years and while there are a few worthwhile works from ancient Greece, the vast majority can be ignored.

>>7407468
Nearly every single philosophical book can be read and perfectly understood without context.
>>
>>7407447
That is why you do not speak about philosophy until you reach the end (Hegel)

This poster is the perfect example of what happens to you when you don't start with the Greeks. You become someone who makes many faulty assumptions.
>>
>>7407482
I've read Hegel and I confess some of his writings go over my head, however I doubt reading greek misconceptions of society and nature will help any reader.

>>7407489
Yes.

>>7407483
>>7407493
For a supposedly educated board, you sure aren't acting like it.
>>
>>7407477

So you're saying they must be wrong about everything
>I don't understand this meme.
Therefore you must not understand anything

Why then should we accept your opinion?
>>
>>7407598
Euthyphro: I cannot follow what you're saying, Socrates.
>>
>>7407447
This person illustrates perfectly what the problem is with the "start with the greeks" meme. The meme implies that the greeks are this monolithic philosophical construct as opposed to an ongoing philosophical conversation so degenerates like this read Aristotle or parts of Plato and say "the Greeks were wrong about everything lul"
>>
> he doesn't shill Aristotelian virtue ethics on the internet

>>
>>7407656

Wow I did too

What'd you think?

Also, can someone fill me in on what it means to be akin to daedulus?
>>
>>7408537
According to ancient Greek mythology, Daedulus carved wooden statues that appeared so real that they even appeared to move. Plato used the reference to say each is accusing the other of "moving the goalposts" or otherwise changing what the argument is, what the language they are using means, etc. The allusion also carries with it the connotation that this is being done in a deceitful manner, as the wooden statues caused their observers to be deceived.
>>
so basically, you just read the greeks to understand whatever random ass reference is made by whoever?
Is philosophy so unimportant and lacks so much substance that it's basically namedropping and quoting: the field?
