I never see Harrison discussed on this board, he's like a non-shitty version of Moorcock

Latro in the Mist

Latro in the Mist
Book of the Short Sun
The Wizard Knight
Lord of the rings
Silmarillion
Children of Hurin
Heard good things about Le Guin.
That's where it ends unless you count in cool pulp like Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser.
>>
>>7406244
man i love Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, i wish there were more books like Leiber's novels
>>
>>7406247
To be honest only light Wolfe is close to those as far as I'm aware, but Wolfe isn't nearly as good at light, easy going novels.
>>
>>7406222
I recently read Light and Nova Swing and they were excellent, among the best sci-fi books I've read.
>>
>>7406222
The only correct answer here is Lord Dunsany. Pegana, Jorkens, all good.
>>
>>7406222

I second Harrison. At least his Viriconium books...
>>
>>7406244
The pretentiousness after the third line in this post.
>>
>>7406525
Why?
>>
KJ Parker
>>
Viriconium is just anti-Tolkien drivel without any actual substance behind it. He's like the post boy for New Wave sf bullshit and I wish he'd just be forgotten already.

At least Moorcock didn't take himself so seriously.

Tolkien a shit, yes he probably made his own language, still doesn't change the fact that his stories are dry and boring.

Anyone on this board who says Tolkien is good, is looking at him through nostalgic goggles.

I would only take the opinion of persons seriously, if they read the books as adults, and never before.

It's those same nostalgic cunts who say Eragon and Thomas Covenant are good books.

>Tolkien a shit, yes he probably made his own language, still doesn't change the fact that his stories are dry and boring.
I found them to be exceptionally vivid and engaging. Dry and boring is the critique of a pleb describing Moby Dick.
>Anyone on this board who says Tolkien is good, is looking at him through nostalgic goggles.
I read him this year. Children of Hurin and Silmarillion were excellent. Really great if you like tragedy and mythology.
>I would only take the opinion of persons seriously, if they read the books as adults, and never before.
As I've said, read him this year.
>It's those same nostalgic cunts who say Eragon and Thomas Covenant are good books.
Never read those two. In fact I didn't like reading as a kid at all.

These are very conflicting claims.

Why not “A Canticle for Leibowitz”?
>>
>>7407156
He said fantasy and desu that one isn't as good.

Robert E. Howard is really good in this regard, very similar style to Leiber.
>>
>>7407226
Short stories for Machen. The Worm Ouroboros or the Zimiamvian trilogy(has his best writing) for Eddison. Little, Big for Crowley
>>
>>7408413
Not OP, but do you know if I can download the Zimiamvian trilogy anywhere?

The Kane Series by Karl Edward Wagner is a good take on sword and sorcery.
>>
haha moorcock is a funny name

I have always hoped that someday, a male pornstar might appear who is a fan of Moorcock.

And that he takes the stage name 'Michael Morecock'
>>
>>7411254

>>
>>7411254

I actually opened lit today while wondering why Ive never seen M John Harrison mentioned.

Currently reading "Course of the Heart" and loving it.

Which other Harrison novels are set in a contemporary, semi realistic setting? I live in England and I love the way he portrays place and environment. I know"Climbers" has a realistic, contemporary setting and plan on reading this next.
>>
>>
>>7413008
Seconded, Harrison's prose is fantastic.
>>
>>7406222
That cover is too cool. Wish I had that rather than the dumb egg and gear one. Meh that's cool too.
>>
>>7411254
Or Michael Moarcock

His filmography spans many topics and genres:

military
>Dishonorable Discharge

McCarthy era in Hollywood
>Blackballed

Contemporary NSA scandals
>Whistleblower
>>
>>7406222
Lud-in-the-mist
