Absolutely revolting. I know we talk a lot about what is and isn't pleb literature but it is undeniable that Franzen is horrendously plebian. He is the most middebrow author I have ever encountered. All his musings about life and humanity are surface deep and all his female characters are obvious fap fantasies.
Lovecraft has always struck me as being a very sheltered and paranoid man who simply feared everything alien to him. From what I've read it seems that as he got older he got less raciest, and apparently that his correspondence with Robert E. Howard had a notable effect on the moderation of his views.
