I'm a literary pleb, because I have a pretty bad attention span for reading, yet I would like to spend more time with books. Can /lit/ recommend me some novels or short story collections that move at a blazingly fast pace? I enjoy abstract imagery and I'm mostly a sci-fi short story fan (e.g. Dangerous Visions, Ballard's works), but other genres are also acceptable.

Good pick, I like what I've read from him. Anything else comparable (apart from the other mythos guys)

The house on the Borderland
The Conan Stories of R.E Howard.

Didn't recognize the first one, will check.
Isn't Conan in general just lowbrow pulp fantasy, or have I been too swayed by the film adaptations?
I'd recommend any short story by Edgar Allan Poe, especially The Murder in the Rue Morgue. Find yourself the anthology of his works at any major book store. He's mysteriously brilliant.

Have you read Bradbury's stuff?

I've really liked his The Gold-Bug, but I've admittedly never delved very much further into his other material. I remember I had some anthology of his sitting at home actually.

Absolutely not.
I'm currently trying to become more acquainted with reading after a 2-year-long hiatus, and it's taking me a lot of time to plow through his work (even though I really like most of it)
joining the question. im looking for some short books without too much poetic language, but not childrens books. ive started reading only a year ago(at 19) , so translating every second word is taking all the pleasure away from the book.
