Why does my writing keep on switching between tenses, no matter which one I write in out of Past and Present. No matter what I always slip up. Am I retarded?

That's what editing is for, man. Don't sweat the petty stuff on your first draft.

Possibly. Are you writing in your native language? I'm fairly certain I've never had that problem since at least the time my age hit double digits. It's kind of hard to imagine how a native speaker could even have that problem. Do you forget when the events you're writing about are supposed to take place halfway through the sentence or something?

Writing in native language. No, I don't forget, it's more of a natural flow kind of thing that just ends up changing it within my subconscious. I think I'm slowly overcoming it but when I'm writing again later today, if it changes I'll post up an example.

The historic present tense exists. 'Cicero would often go to the senate house. One day he is on his way when he hears no one invited him to the stabbing party, after that he was sad. He will write a letter expressing this to Atticus'
