should i read Master and Margarita or War and Peace next???
I would also like any supplementary info to either of the books. Stuff about the author during the writing of the book, or some hidden themes throughout.

Both are exceptional. You should know that Tolstoi is also much more conventional than Boulgakov, and is widely regard by academics as a less mature author; while his talent is undeniable, he ended blooming less fully than some of his fellows, including Dosto, Boulgakov, etc.
I would start with War and Peace and work my way up, it makes more sense chronologically speaking, as you would have a better understanding of Russia that way.
