Overrated. Like Japanese films, it LOOKS like a novel but there's really no content. It's pure imitation of American or European models without anything inside, like a replicant out of Philip K Dick.

gb2reddit

your presence makes the board infinitely shittier

i dont even like murakami

Yep, I feel the same way about Roth, Delillo, Pynchon, McCarthy, Faulkner, Fitzgerald and their like. Shitty science fiction by Dick is all I read.

Hi! Based on your post, I think you might like another literary forum here on the wonderful internet.

It's called reddit.com/r/books. It's filled with intellectuals just like you. See you there! :)

Oh, and "upvote"! xD

>DUDE, MY BOOKS HAVE A LOT OF SEX SCENES BECAUSE IS JUST A PART OF OUR LIFES THAT WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO TALK/WRITE ABOUT WITHOUT MORAL RESTRICTIONS, BUT I MANAGE TO ACHIEVE THE OPPOSITE BY OVERUSING THEM RIDICULOUSLY IN EVERY CONTEXT POSSIBLE LMAO

Seriously, how the fuck do you guys read more than one book by this guy.

Suck my cock. And I'm Mary fucking McCarthy, I don't even have one, and yet my cock is still bigger than yours. Just like Hedda Gabler was more man than you'll ever be and more woman than you'll ever have in one tidy package, you weeaboo moron. You're like a White Knight riding to save Cio-Cio-San from Pinkerton. Grow up.

As Congreve put it, ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’. Fuck off? Suck my dick. I'm Mary McCarthy and I'm a bigger, more judgmental bitch than you'll ever see in your life, AND I'm smarter than you.

Incidentally, do you recall Dr Johnson's learned critical opinion on Congreve's ‘Incognita’? I DO. You don't, so look it up and tell Harold Bloom that the same could be applied to his EXCELLENT fantasy novel, The Flight To Lucifer. Tell him it read to me like Ursula K LeGuin and Cynthia Ozick locked in furious thigh-shuddering soixante-neuf in a nightmare he's having, in which Nathanael West is directing Harold Bloom in a film adaptation of ‘Leather Goddesses of Phobos’.

I'm just the Bawksy of /lit/. Any woman who knows as much about literature as I do, and who can outargue any of the blowhards who post here regularly, should DEFINITELY be something that you all can fap to. And I don't even have to show my face. I'll just tell you that I had a Catholic girlhood, and so you know I've been waiting for the right boy. And he has to know as much about literature as Edmund Wilson did to get my attention.

So don't fuck with me, fellas, this ain't my first time at the rodeo. As Joan Crawford once said.

Harold is a rodeo-clown, darling. He thinks of Leopold Bloom as ‘a Jew’ and Molly Bloom as, well, Molly Bloom, although recently reviewing Antony Julius in the NYT he described Leopold's Jewishness as ‘problematic’—To a patriarchal rabbi of the old school, it's the opposite: if you read Gifford's notes on Ulysses carefully, you might notice that Leopold Bloom is technically NOT a Jew—his mother is not Jewish—whereas Molly Bloom technically IS a Jew. Her mother from Gibraltar, Lunita Laredo, is identified as Jewish in the last chapter. But YOU haven't. Luckily I'm dead and will never have to feel Harold's boneless hand on my thigh.
>>
Personally, Sputnik Sweetheart was my favourite.
>>
Can I still vote if I've only read two of his books? I mean, I'm still not going to vote because I couldn't decide between them, anyway, but I'd like to know if I'm allowed.
>>
>>7392594
Yeah, sure. I don't think most people here have read all of his works to make a definitive conclusion. It's just a poll on the internet anyway.

How many of you think that the first book you read by Murakami is his best?

I'm asking because I read Kafka first and really enjoyed it, but haven't liked anything else by him. It feels like I was charmed by his writing and atmosphere, and that the charm just wore off really quickly. Plus that a lot of his books contain such similar elements that it almost feels like reading the same book again. Is it just me or does anyone else feel the same?
>>
>>7393178
I've read like 4 books by him, 1Q84, Sputnik, Wild Sheep Chase and then Kafka (which was my favorite). So it's not that you will always like the one you read first the best, it's just that you started with the best one. I agree he gets really, really tiresome after a few books.
>>
>>7393178
My first was Norwegian Wood, but my favorites are the Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and A Wild Sheep Chase.
>>
>>7393325
>>7393470
Huh, I suppose my theory was entirely wrong then.
>>
>>7391938
you're right idk why all these fags are flaming you

murakami is for plebs, though, so i guess it makes sense that a board populated by plebs would rush to defend their hero
>>
>>7394238
If he's for plebs then why are the only people who complain about his writing come up with absolutely pleb arguments?
>>
>>7391973
Fuck... just stop.
>>
>>7394269
Not him, but could you give me your reasoning as to why you like him? I'm interested.
>>
>>7394278
He has a distinctive and incredibly comfy style, that's about the only reason.
>>
>>7394269
Murakami's work is firmly middlebrow. As for why that's bad just read the Woolf essay.
>>
>>7394286
Thanks for proving my initial point right, much appreciated.
>>
>>7394292
how is that a pleb argument? i don't need to sit here and type out 1k words when someone else did that 70 years ago and much more eloquently
>>
>>7394284
Fair enough, I guess. But don't you think it gets a bit old after about 400 pages of nothing but comfiness?
>>
>>7394284
>complains about "pleb arguments"
>likes him because he's "comfy", a totally meaningless buzzword

yea ok bud.
>>
Do I need to know Kafka well to understand Kafka On The Shore? All I've read is Metamorphosis.
>>
>>7394312
Not at all.
>>
>>7394300
Okay, whatever you say, not going to bite even further.
>>7394302
If anything, I would say that his shortest novels are the worst due to the insufficient engulfment in comfiness.
>>7394309
Okay.

>>7394312
You might want to read In the Penal Colony because it's specifically referenced at one point, but it's not really required.
>>
>>7394312
He's called Kafka because it's Czech for crow or jackdaw

/lit/ - literature
>>
>>7394325
Fuck off, retard
>>
>>7391928
This dude is overhyped. Then again, I've only read wind up bird and Kafka, but I get the sense that he writes along one plotline for a while, comes up with something unexpected (ghost woods! talking cat! bedroom ghost! baseball bat?) and then writes from there. His transitions from one part to the next don't feel organic at all and the narrative suffers.
>>
how is this board not just /v/ for books exactly

I don't go to /v/ because video games aren't art.

>>
>>7391928
FCK OFF ALL U MEAN PEOPLE HES THE BEST AUTHR OF ALL TIME MORE INFLUNTIAL THAN SHAKESPEARE
>>
>>7394408
i feel the exact opposite. he writes from one plotline until it organically transforms into another through the strangeness, dreamlikeness, surrealism of the world he has created through the uneventful everyday life of the main character. i see lynch and kafka in it and i like it.
>>
>>7391928

I'm currently reading Norwegian Wood.....and desu I like it a lot. It's a slight notch above YA with a bunch of anime romcom thrown in, but dammit I'm enjoying it.

I also have Wind-up Bird Chronicle. Anything else by him I should look into?
